Committee Of 70: The Budget Message We Need Now

A special message from Philadelphia's non-partisan public watchdog, the Committee of 70:

The snow is gone, but you may still find yourself snowed under by budgets coming at you from all different directions.
It’s a lot easier to debate the pros and cons of each proposal by putting them in one place:
Governor Corbett’s $27.3 billion budget proposal slashes funding for education and social programs. Read the governor’s plan to attack PA’s $4.16 billion deficit at PA budget. If you just have time for the highlights, read the press release issued today.
Mayor Nutter says the state cuts will take a “serious toll” on the city, but it’s too soon to say whether they will force changes in the budget he introduced on March 3. Read the mayor’s address at Philadelphia budget. Check out the highlights here.
The Committee of Seventy added fuel to the budget debate on February 28 by releasing The Budget Address We Need to Hear. In anticipation of reductions in state and federal funds, Seventy focused on what Philadelphia should be doing to build a better future. We, too, have highlights. See an OpEd by Seventy’s President & CEO Zack Stalberg: The budget Philadelphians need.
These budgets have a real effect on all of us – at home and at work. So please let us know how you think Governor Corbett did – how Mayor Nutter did – and also how the Committee of Seventy did. You can reach us at futureofthecity@seventy.org.
