The Winner Expresses Joy To All The World!

This fall, Philadelphia Archbishop Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap., along with the Auxiliary Bishops of Philadelphia and the Archdiocesan Office of Catholic Education (OCE) announced an inaugural “Christmas Card Design Event” in the 217 parishes, 17 high schools, 122 elementary schools, and 4 schools of special education in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.

School administrators, teachers, Parish Religious Education Program (PREP) teachers, and parents were invited to encourage students to create an original design for the Archbishop’s official Christmas card cover to depict “The Joy of Christ’s Birth.” The winning entry was designed by Bishop Shanahan High School(Chester County) Junior, Erin Layton.

Over 550 designs were received from students in PREP, Kindergarten through 12th grades, and the Schools of Special Education. Staff members from the OCE were tasked with judging entries.

In addition, to Ms. Layton’s winning entry, five additional students were recognized with Honorable Mention for their designs in the contest in the following categories: PREP, Olivia Tarasiewicz, grade 6, Saint Michael the Archangel Parish (Bucks County); Kindergarten through 4th grades, Corina Burton, grade 4, Saint Mary Catholic School (Montgomery County); 5th through 8th grades, Isabella Zepeda, grade 6, Saint Anthony of Padua Regional Catholic School (Philadelphia); 9th through 12th grades, Anna Sherman, grade 10, Cardinal O’Hara High School(Delaware County), and Schools of Special Education, Rebecca Bell, Saint Katherine Day School – Radnor Campus/High School Program (Delaware County).

About Dan Cirucci

A native of Camden NJ, Cirucci is a former President of the Philadelphia chapter of the International Association of Business Communicators. Cirucci served as Associate Executive Director of the Philadelphia Bar Association for nearly 30 years. He served as Chair of Penn State University's Professional Advisory Board for the Corporate Communication major at Penn State Abington and on the Pennsylvania Bar Association's Judicial Selection Commission.

He received his MA degree from Rowan University and his BA from Villanova University. He has been named a Distinguished Alumnus of Rowan's public relations program and received the E. A. "Wally" Richter Leadership Award, the highest honor from the National Association of Bar Executives' Communications Section. He has also been honored by numerous other local, state and national groups.

In his hometown of Camden, Cirucci taught fifth grade at the Ulysses Wiggins Elementary School named for the founder of the Camden NAACP. There he was one of the first teachers in the country to teach African-American history to inner city students. He later served as editor of a local weekly newspaper, as Assistant to the Township Manager of Cherry Hill Township and as Associate Director of Communications at the New Jersey State Bar Association.

Cirucci's passions include politics, the popular culture, books and authors, art, communication, music, theatre, movies, dining and travel.
