Rob Andrews, who has represented the district in Congress since 1990 announced earlier today that he is stepping down. Norcross, is the brother of Democrat power broker George Norcross who is also part owner of Philadelphia's two daily newspapers. Donald Norcross currently serves as a State Senator for Legislative District 5 and Assistant Majority Leader. The entirety of the 5th Legislative District is within the 1st Congressional District.
"I am running for Congress because South Jersey needs someone who is going to stand up for us in Washington, D.C., as Rob Andrews has done for more than two decades," said Norcross today. "I have spent mycareer fighting for middle class families, senior citizens and workers. It is a sad truth that while some are doing better, too many are falling further behind. If elected to Congress, I will focus on
creating jobs across South Jersey and an equal opportunity for everyone."
Norcross says he has "deep roots in the 1st Congressional District." He was born at Cooper Hospital, attended Pennsauken High School and obtained a degree from Camden County College. He raised his family in Camden County and resides in the City of Camden. An electrician by trade, Norcross followed in his father's footsteps, serving as head of the AFL-CIO Central Labor Union and president of the Camden County andVicinity Building Trades Council. He continues to serve as an Assistant Businessm Manager for the electricians.
"My father believed that every child deserved a good education and every worker deserved a fair shake," continued Norcross. "Those are the principles and priorities I took with me to Trenton and will take with me to Washington, DC if I am elected."
In the State Senate, Norcross says he has been committed to making New Jersey
more affordable for everyone who lives and works in the state. He has focused on reducing the cost of government, creating jobs and bringing new businesses to South Jersey, and strengthening our region's higher education and healthcare industries.
In his 2013 State Senate campaign, Norcross won endorsements from a wide variety of organizations, including, but not limited to, the powerful New Jersey Education Association (NJEA), New Jersey American Federation of Teachers (NJ AFT), the New Jersey and Southern New Jersey Building Trades, the New Jersey and Southern New Jersey AFL-CIO, Planned Parenthood of New Jersey, the New Jersey Fraternal Order of Police, the Professional Fire Fighters Association of NJ (PFANJ), New Jersey Firefighters' Mutual Benevolent Association, the New Jersey Business and Industry Association, the New Jersey Outdoor Alliance, and AAUP/AFT (Rutgers Professors).
"As a constituent and a friend, I thank Rob Andrews for his service. I hope that if I am elected, I can carry on the fine work he did for the people of the First District. I believe that our best days are
ahead," Norcross concluded.
Norcross and his wife Andrea live in the City of Camden. He is the father of three children and the grandfather of two.
