In 1917 John G. Johnson, the most famous lawyer of his day, left his astonishing trove of European art to the city of Philadelphia.
One hundred years later, the Philadelphia Museum of Art is taking a new look at one of this country’s most remarkable collections. Now through February 19, in Old Masters Now: Celebrating The Johnson Collection, you will encounter treasures by the likes of Botticelli, Bosch, Titian, Rembrandt, and Monet—and see how the Museum keeps making new discoveries about the collection.
We've seen this exhibition and it is nothing less than ravishing. Every part of it is beautifully displayed in spacious, airy galleries that give you a true sense of wonder.
Far from being a static group of objects, the Johnson Collection is subject to constant care, study, and scrutiny. What does it mean to tend to and learn from an art collection of this magnitude and significance? What discoveries and challenges are encountered day in, day out? These are just some of the questions that are explored in this astonishing show.
In this exhibition, get a behind-the-scenes look at a living, breathing trove of priceless art and experience first-hand how our understanding and appreciation of these works have evolved over the years.
Take a look at just a small part of this remarkable exhibition!
