My father was not a preacher.
He didn't lecture.
He taught by example.
The lessons could be found in the way he lived, the way he conducted himself each day and the way he treated others.
In no particular order, here are the most important things that I learned from him.
1) Put a smile on your face before you head out into the world each day.
2) Appreciate yourself. If you don't like yourself, you won't be able to like anyone else.
3) Try to be nice to everyone because you never know who you're gonna need.
4) No matter how important or unimportant your work may seem, work hard and take pride in your work. It's an important part of who you are.
5) Appreciate and live for (and in ) the moment -- treasure it -- but don't forget to keep saving a little for tomorrow.
6) Keep your word. Responsibility counts and loyalty matters.
7) Keep your wits about you. People are only human and if you're not on your toes, well -- you may just get knocked to the ground. So, be alert. Keep your eyes and ears open at all times.
8) Get an early start each day and finish your work promptly. Then, the rest of the day is yours.
9) Know and hold fast to your special craft or talent. Hone it, because it's one of the few things they cannot take away from you. Let it shine!
10) Always strive to make sure others are more indebted to you than you are to them.
And one more thing: Live without regret as you laugh heartily at the world and all its foolishness.
Thanks, Dad!
