University of California Berkeley defeated Life University by a 19-14 score to win the 2013 USA Sevens Collegiate Rugby Championship at PPL Park in Chester, PA. While Life University was one of the most underrated teams of the tournament, University of California Berkeley has long been a favorite to win the championship and finally achieved this goal.
The final four of University of California Berkeley, Life University, UCLA and Navy produced several tremendous matches throughout the weekend. During the semifinal round, University of California Berkeley was able to hold off UCLA in a 33-21 win, while Life University upset Navy in a 43-7 defeat. University of California Berkeley took an early lead over Life University in the Championship Final, ending the first half with a score of 14-0. While Life University rallied to put 14 points on the board during the second half, University of California Berkeley never relinquished their lead and managed to bring home their first Collegiate Rugby Championship.
Twenty of the nation’s premier collegiate rugby teams met in the USA Sevens Collegiate Rugby Championship (CRC) at PPL Park in Chester, PA, on Saturday, June 1 and Sunday, June 2. The tournament featured 47 matches over two days in exciting pool play format. Participating teams for the CRC were chosen based on their quality of rugby, fan following and the potential for exciting rivalries. Local favorites University of Delaware, Penn State University and Temple University returned for the 2013 contest and were joined by St. Joseph’s University, Kutztown University, and University of Pennsylvania, each participating in their first CRC.
