Legislators Question Sherrill's Misplaced Priorities

New Jersey State Senator Kristin Corrado (R-Bergen, Essex, Passaic) released the following statement questioning Governor Sherrill’s decision to increase funding for the Detention Deportation Defense Initiative by $12 million, bringing the total to $20.2 million, as she has insisted every dollar of new spending would be offset by budget cuts.

“The Governor has insisted that this year's budget is a 'something in, something out' exercise, so what is being cut to pay for another $12 million in immigration legal defense funding, and what will the new Rapid Legal Response Initiative cost? Coming on the heels of the Delaney Hall controversy, this feels less like a policy decision and more like a political one. New Jersey families are being forced to accept drastic reductions to their school aid funding resulting in everything from sports to courtesy bussing being cut while the administration finds millions for initiatives designed to satisfy the Democrats’ extreme political base.”

In response to Governor Sherrill’s announcement that she is increasing funding for the Detention Deportation Defense Initiative by $12 million for a total of $20.2 million, New Jersey State Senate Republican Leader Anthony M. Bucco (R-Morris, Passaic) released the following statement:

“We're told there's not enough money for our schools as districts weigh cuts to basic skills programs, sports, and student services. But there's $20 million available for projects like this? Funding our children's education should be the top priority. This tells us exactly where the Governor’s priorities lie.”
