The state of our union
“Less than one year has passed since I first stood at this podium, in this majestic chamber, to speak on behalf of the American People,” President Donald J. Trump began his address last night. “Each day since, we have gone forward with a clear vision and a righteous mission—to make America great again for all Americans.”

- Immigration reform: “Struggling communities, especially immigrant communities, will also be helped by immigration policies that focus on the best interests of American workers and American families.”
- Getting trade right: “America has also finally turned the page on decades of unfair trade deals that sacrificed our prosperity and shipped away our companies, our jobs, and our wealth.”

Live Blogging The State Of The Union - Part 5
One of the most poignant moments of the evening: the couple who adopted a drug abuser's little baby. The couple and the baby are there in the gallery. Extraordinary!
Please note that President does not skip a beat. His cadence, his elocution, his delivery -- all incredible! There are no "ohs" or "ehs" or "ahhs" or flubs. No mispronounced words. No fragmented sentences.
"Terrorists are not merely criminals. They are also unlawful enemy combatants. When captured overseas they should be treated like the terrorists they are."
"I just signed an order directing Secretary Mattis to reexamine our military detention policies and to keep open the detention facilities in Guantanamo Bay."
Now the President asks that foreign aid goes to "friends of America, not enemies of America."
And he zeroes in on North Korea saying "we are waging a campaign of maximum pressure" against them. "I will not repeat the mistakes of previous administrations that got us into this dangerous situation."
Now we see the parents of Otto Warmbier. Another deeply touching moment. "Your strength truly inspires us all," the President says.
"Tonight we pledge to honor Otto's memory with total American resolve."
President Trump's message is literally being brought to life tonight -- dramatically, person-by-person. It's an inspiring evening!
We're getting vivid evidence of every feeling, every proposal, every plank of Trumpism. It's impactful and very memorable.
What an evening!
Now, the audience is chanting "USA, USA, USA!"
"They are Americans. And this capitol, this city, this nation belongs entirely to them. Our task is to respect them, to listen to them, to serve them, to protect them and always to be worthy of them."
"The people dreamed this country; the people built this country and it's the people who are making America great again."
This speech was a masterstroke!

Now, dramatically, the President introduces parents of victims of the brutal MS-13 gang. It's a poignant moment for these parents who have lost their children to violence and a touchstone on the hot-button immigration issue. "We can make sure that other families do not have to endure this pain," the President says in calling for the closing of loopholes in the immigration laws.
Nobody -- nobody! -- had ever come at this issue this dramatically and this hard before. The President is making an emotional, compelling and overwhelming case for immigration control and immigration reform.
And now comes the coupe d'etat: "Americans are dreamers too!" This line elicits thunderous applause, but ONLY from the republicans. Again, the Dems sit on their hands.
The President is pouring it on tonight. There is no letup. He's taking it to them. This is masterful!

"We nearly doubled the standard deduction for everyone."
"We also doubled the child tax credit."
"The typical family of four making $75,000 will see their tax bill drop by $2,000 slashing that bill in half."
"The core of the disastrous Obamacare, the individual mandate is now gone!" And here, the President himself applauds. The ovation is loud and sustained. But only from GOP members.
Now he introduces owners of a small family business from Ohio -- a business that has finished the best year in its history and the owners are now expanding and hiring more people. Now we see a young man (African-American) who's employed in that business and he's moving up in his job and getting raises.
"Just a little while ago MobilExxon announced a $50 BILLION investment in the United States."
Now, he says to American workers: "This is your time. If you work hard, if you believe in America, you can be anything and, together we can absolutely achieve anything."
"We all share the same home, the same heart, the same destiny and the same great American flag."
The President says that in America we believe in God, family and country and here he repeats the words: "In God we trust." Half the chamber stands and applauds. At the mention of the flag and God, the Democrats sit on their hands.
Now President Trump talks about saluting the flag and standing for the National Anthem -- this on the eve of the Super Bowl. "Americans love their country and they deserve a government that shows them the same love and loyalty in return!"

President Trump is expected to strike a more conciliatory tone tonight. Let's see what happens . . .
My guess is that this is the year he will put the Dems on the spot, leading up to the midyear election. He will reach out to to try work with them again and again. If he's unable to do any deals with them, it will be on them heading into the election and he'll hit them hard with it.
The President looks great as he arrives in the chamber. He's wearing a bright blue tie -- a nice, cool, conciliatory color.
Melania Trump is all in white. She looks ravishing, as usual.
The President has been up in the polls of late. His numbers are creeping up and people are looking at the tax legislation more and more favorably every day.
Here we go . . . . .

To those recovering from the natural disasters of the past year: "We are with you, we love you and together, we will always pull through, always!"
Now the President singles out "The Legend From Louisianna, Congressman Steve Scalise!"
Here he asks everyone to "come together not as Republicans or Democrats but as representatives of the people." And now, Schumer applauds somewhat but, defiantly, Pelosi refuses to applaud.
"The state of our union is strong because our people are strong."

Remember The Names Of The Filthy Fourteen!
Fourteen "Catholic" senators voted in Washington yesterday to allow second-trimester abortions to continue -- abortions at 20 weeks or more.
They did this by voting not to advance a bill that would ban such abortions. In fact, they wouldn't even let the Senate vote on the bill itself. Instead, they voted to effectively block it from a vote.
Nearly all Republicans voted to advance the bill.
Nearly all Democrats voted to block it.
Two Republican women (both "Catholic") voted to block it: Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Susan Collins of Maine. Their votes were particularly egregious. But all of the senators listed below who call themselves "Catholic" are a disgrace. All of them!
Every one of the fourteen should be roundly condemned by every member of the clergy in the United States -- every priest, nun, bishop, cardinal, brother, etc.
All faithful Catholics should call the offices of these senators and express their outrage.

For the 43rd consecutive year, the Archdiocese of Philadelphia will participate in Catholic Relief Services’ (CRS) Rice Bowl, a nationwide Lenten program that gives people of all ages a way to respond to human suffering with compassion through tangible action. Auxiliary Bishop John J. McIntyre will preside at this year’s Rice Bowl blessing and kick-off event.
CRS Rice Bowl has been a tradition for generations of Catholics. It started in 1975 as a response to a global famine in Africa. Today, it shines a light on the Catholic community’s commitment to the poor and vulnerable. It is global in its reach bringing tangible goods and services to people in need around the world.

Choice Center City Ministry Get New Leaders . . .
The Dominican Friars of the Province of Saint Joseph will begin service at Saint Patrick Parish in Philadelphia on July 1st, 2018. The Dominicans, also known as the Order of Preachers, most recently served at Holy Name of Jesus Parish (Philadelphia) for nearly a century, leaving the Archdiocese in 1998. The friars also served on the faculty of La Salle University during that time.
Staffing will initially consist of four friars: two of them will work in the parish as the pastor and parochial vicar, one of them will join the faculty of an Archdiocesan high school and the fourth will assist with various ministries.
The Order’s provincial,Very Reverend Kenneth Letoile, OP, said of the move, “We are delighted to accept Archbishop Chaput's gracious invitation to establish a new Dominican community in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. It comes at a providential moment for us: vocations to our Dominican province have been increasing over recent years, and we have long wanted to return to Philadelphia in order to serve the vibrant local church there. The Dominican Order was founded over 800 years ago as the Order of Preachers, and ever since, Dominicans have been dedicated to the work of preaching and teaching the faith. We are therefore very happy to be able to minister in the Archdiocese by accepting the pastoral care for Saint Patrick's Church in Rittenhouse Square, which offers a rectory with sufficient space for a full Dominican community of priests and brothers, and a pastoral setting congruent with our charism.”
The Province of Saint Joseph was founded in 1805, and serves the Eastern United States. Their 300 friars engage in a variety of ministries, including serving as teachers (Providence College), parish priests, hospital chaplains, itinerant preachers, and campus ministers, while also undertaking missionary work in Eastern Africa.
Father Daniel Mackle, who has served as the pastor of Saint Patrick’s since June 2004, will move to Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary where he currently teaches Liturgy. That work will continue as he serves as Director of Liturgy for the Seminary.

WHAT State Is HE The Governor Of, Huh?

Phil Murphy is working overtime in his first days as governor to help illegal aliens continue breaking U.S. law, Save Jerseyans.
There’s no other way to accurately describe it, but it’s not exactly a surprise either; he told us that non-New Jerseyans would be his top priority as New Jersey governor back during the campaign. Not you or me or any of the many hard-working, diverse citizens who came here the right way from distant lands. He’s consistent if nothing else…
Not that it’s much consolation. Phil Murphy’s taxpayer-funded federal DACA lawsuit move announced Wednesday is cheap political theater. It’s even more insulting than his decision to “rush” to a church on Thursday after ICE detained two illegals.
Yes, he hasn’t filed anything yet. And yes, other states are already involved so New Jersey’s participation is symbolic at best.
Murphy STILL hasn’t announced a plan to lower actual citizens’ property taxes. Not during the campaign or now as the first 100 days are well underway.
The people who pay the bills will continually be expected to pay out the nose for his party’s latest voter registration drive (which is 100% what this is all about) so that Murphy can build a “progressive” crusader profile for the Democrats’ 2020 or 2024 presidential primary.
Next up? His novel but no less awful for it “office of immigrant protection” proposal. Other governors wasted our money in billions of bad ways. This guy will be the first to blow it all on people who aren’t even New Jerseyans.
Some New Jersey governors have been better (or less terrible?) than others. What’s unique about this guy? In an awful sort of way? His complete and utter lack of concern for the people who actually legally reside here — of all backgrounds, races and creeds — and pay Trenton’s bills… including his salary.
Chris Christie waited a couple of years before losing interest in governing; Phil Murphy didn’t wait two weeks.
He’s on the fast track to a one term tenure.
