At this special Philadelphia Public Relations Association (PPRA) program, four of our PPRA Hall of Famers will reveal the back stories of some of their biggest projects and the obstacles they overcame to pull them off. 

Moderated by CBS 3 anchor Jim Donovan, this lively discussion will cover case studies from crisis management for high-profile clients to celebrations such as the recent Philadelphia Eagles Championship Parade. Family-style lunch is included with registration.

Favoritre Dining Spots, Attractions

We've been visiting a number of our favorite dining spots, museums and other attractions recently and it's a pleasure to tell you about them:

Devon Seafood Grill - Well established among a fine selection of Rittenhouse Square restaurants, Philadelphia's Devon Seafood Grill offers fresh premium seafood, an impressive wine cellar and handcrafted, signature cocktails mixed by bar chefs well practiced in the art of mixology. We enjoyed fresh martinis, calamari, and a variety of entrees including fresh, flaky halibut, swordfish, salmon and cioppino. The famous sweet biscuits here are out of this world. And the key lime pie is the best you'll find anywhere. The service is seamless and the inviting, upscale casual atmosphere truly sets Devon apart from many other Philadelphia restaurants. And the prices are appealing as well. This is a real winner!

Delaware Art Museum [pictured] - We journeyed down I-95 to the Delaware Art Museum in Wilmington to view two great shows: Exposed! Revealing Sources In Contemporary Art and Ellen B. T. Pyle, Illustrating Her World. These two exhibitions were as different as they can be but both were fascinating and illuminating.
Ellen Bernard Thompson Pyle (1876-1936) was born in Germantown, Pennsylvania.
She studied art at the Drexel Institute, and she was one of the few female students invited to study illustration at Howard Pyle’s Chadds Ford summer school.
She married Pyle’s brother Walter in 1904. She was a prolific illustrator during the 1920s, famous especially for her 40 covers for The Saturday Evening Post. Her recognizable style drew acclaim from around the country.
She receives the first overview of her career in this exhibition of approximately 50 works.
Exposed! explores artistic strategies of quotation and appropriation. The featured works present various relationships to their sources, from respectful homage to cultural critique.
The exhibition includes works of art by Robert Rauschenberg, Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Richard Prince, Jeff Koons, Robert Colescott, Grace Hartigan, Ellen Gallagher, and Glenn Ligon, among others.
Some pieces are from the Delaware Art Museum’s collection, and some are on loan from private collections.
Pyle runs through January 3 while Exposed! runs through October 4.

Maggiano's Cherry Hill - We visited the new Maggiano's Little Italy at the Cherry Hill Mall and were very pleased with our luncheon slections. This is a big, splashy, spacious Maggiano's and we hear it's already one of the most successful spots in the Maggiano's chain.
A huge bar serves tasty adult beverages and though the luncheon and dinner entrees here are always plentiful you can also order smaller portions if you'd like.
And now Maggiano's Cherry Hill is offering a family Character Brunch with Dora, Diego, Elmo, Sponge Bob and more. Join them for Sunday Brunch September 13th from 10 am to 1 pm. New Maggiano's Dazzles

We dropped in for lunch at the new Maggiano's Little Italy in Cherry Hill and found a spacious, airy atmosphere with all of those unforgettable Maggiano touches.
A wonderful, welcoming entryway leads to a huge bar area evocative of New York, mid-century. The main dining room is grand with a huge floral arrangement, corner chandeliers, plush elevated booths, tables with checkered linens and comfortable chairs. It's a great place to see and be seen and is destined to be a popular gathering spot.
Everything is made from scratch at Maggiano's and our meal was hot, delicious and -- as always -- plentiful. The bread was fresh and crusty; the orzo soup, zesty The pasta was divine. And our chicken parm sandwich came complete with extra marinara sauce for dipping. Our waitress couldn't do enough for us and the manager came over to chat and see how we were enjoying things.
Another great feature: If you're not sure about a particular dish Maggiano's will probably let you have a taste just so you can make the right decision. But the truth is that everything on the menu is delicious and you can order smaller portions if you'd like.
While we were there we dropped by the banquet rooms and they as much an attraction as the main dining room. In fact, the banquet area can be opened to a full room or divided into several smaller rooms without the usual tacky dividing walls. No expense has been spared here.
Maggiano's will also feature outdoor dining when the weather warms up and a special door accommodates carry out and pick up service.
As we left Maggiano's workers were putting the finishing touches on many other parts of the new Cherry Hill Mall which will welcome Nordstrom on March 27. Stay tuned!

CH Mall: Big Times Near!

Big times are near at the Cherry Hill Mall.
The dream of a totally new, totally re-invented Mall is upon us and the excitement of a new "Main Street" for Cherry Hill is so close we can touch it.
The big new Nordstrom store and Nordstrom wing of the Mall will open on March 27. Nordstrom will launch the store with a benefit gala just prior to the official opening.
We hear that at least ten new stores will probably be ready to open with Nordstrom and these will include J. Crew and Urban Outfitters.
Maggiano's Little Italy will swing open its doors on Monday (3/2) and the new Seasons 52 reataurant will follow close behind on March 23.
The new Capital Grille free-standing, upscale restaurant will open later in the spring and July will bring the opening of California Pizza Kitchen.
Hurry over to the Mall now to check out the new interior environment complete with an all-new bright, airy promenade featuring lovely living-room ensemble sitting areas with new, soft furniture. And, many of the Mall's stores are expanded and/or completely redesigned.
We're not even at the Grand Launch Moment yet and already the place is breathtaking!

Dress Lightly

I hate talking about the weather.

It's really a stupid, boring topic. And there's not much we can do about it anyway.

Plus, you've probably already figured out that I pretty much don't believe in either global warming or climate change Phooey!

But yesterday in Philly the temperature hit 97 and it tied a record, hon! Cheez, it was hot! Felt more like Vegas than Pil'elphia. Know what I mean?

We're expected to get some relief today but it's still hot.

Well, the local TV weathercasters (and Philly has about 357 of 'em) have been yappin and squawkin 'bout the weather like a buncha tropical birds.

Hey, it's not like there aren't places to cool off. For example, I escaped it all by taking a brisk midday walk through the Mall - very comfortable and refreshing, thank you.

And on Monday, a group of us known as the Anne Klein Senior [PR] Counselors Alliance enjoyed a wonderful luncheon/discussion program within the very cool confines of Maggiano's Little Italy. No, I'm not talkin bout that Anne Klein. I'm talking about the legendary PR guru Anne Sceia Klein who founded the Anne Klein Communications Group which is part of Pinnacle worldwide, an international corporation of independent public relations firms with offices in more than 60 major cities throughout the world. Gerry Klein, John Moscatelli and Mike Gross (all of Anne Klein Group) presided over the discussion. Participants included seasoned PR experts (and trusted friends) Susan Baltake and Shirley Bonnem, among others. The temperature was right, the food was good and the compnay was right.

Besides, I learn so much from my colleagues in the profession that no matter how hot the weather, an afternoon with them is always kewel.

From Iron Hill To Ponzio's

Last night we visited nearby West Chester and dined at one of our favorite spots, the Iron Hill Brewery. Iron Hill's lively, informal atmosphere, friendly staff and key location in downtown West Chester make it a welcoming spot all year round but it's always fun in the spring when sidewalk dining opens up. And Iron Hill has recently updated its menu which is augmented by the bar's own fresh brews that vary with the season.
We love West Chester for a variety of reasons. Not the least of these is the fact that this cozy college town is home to PR pro Adam Cirucci who joined us last night. Adam enjoyed one of his favorite Iron Hill menu items, the New York strip steak.
Bright and early this morning we headed to Ponzio's diner/restaurant at the crossroads of Cherry Hill where Mayor Bernie Platt welcomed a group of us for breakfast. The Mayor updated us on plans for continued commercial growth and development in South Jersey's most vibrant community. But Bernie also warned that New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine is trying to "balance the state's budget on the backs of communities like Cherry Hill." The Mayor is not amused - and neither are we! The way we see it, the Governor and state lawmakers ought to wring the state budget and state government dry of mismanagement, waste and corruption before they pass their problems onto sprawling, successful suburban meccas like Cherry Hill.
At the breakfast we chatted with Cherry Hill Mall honcho Bob Ahlquist who told us the big new expansion of the mall is moving ahead right on schedule. In addition to Maggiano's the Mall will announce another new restaurant opening real soon. But Bob's not ready to release the name of this top-drawer restaurant and neither are we. So, stay tuned!
