Remembering A True American Oridinal!

While I enjoy country music, and liked Dolly Parton, I can't say that I was a fan.

I did see her perform live, in person once. It was at The Borgata in Atlantic City at the hotel's cavernous Event Center. It was not the best venue but if you wanted to see Dolly, you had to be prepared to share her with thousands of others. She was a legendary performer and, like many others, I wanted to see her perform live.

And guess what? Even though she appeared on a vast stage in a casino complex with bars dotting the auditorium and alcohol flowing freely and even though my seat was nowhere near what could be called the orchestra, she was in total command of the evening and she was wonderful.

She looked the way you expected her to look. She performed with all the musical accompaniment and bells and whistles you'd expect. She was in fine form, sounding exactly as you'd expect her to sound. She was responsive to the audience throughout and yes, she sang every song you wanted to hear -- all the hits!

That was Dolly Parton.

She was pure entertainment. The glitter, the glamour and the showbizz were all there but they were combined with just the right amount of down home folksiness you'd expect from Dolly. 

Her career was exceptionally well-managed but that was a testament to Dolly herself -- her savvy, her smarts, her good instincts and her professional discipline. I get the feeling she expected the best of her people every minute of every day just as she delivered the same. 

There was never a hint of scandal surrounding this woman. She never allowed herself to be drawn into partisan politics nor did she lecture her audience from the stage or via other avenues. A woman of great faith, she conveyed a sense of generosity, kindness and caring without a scintilla of righteousness.

A complete American success story, there's no doubt she loved this nation and its people and was the grateful embodiment of her own American journey, complete with all its tribulations and triumphs.

State Legislators: No NJ Casinos Beyond AC!

Today, Senator Vince Polistina, Assemblyman Don Guardian and Assemblywoman Claire Swift responded to a recent initiative by Senators Vin Gopal and Paul Sarlo to expand casino gaming to North Jersey.

“New Jersey voters have made their voices clear that casinos belong in Atlantic City and Atlantic City only. Now is the time to focus on strengthening the economy in the Atlantic County region as New York gaming expands,” said Senator Vince Polistina.

“Expanding casino gaming to North Jersey will do nothing to increase gaming revenues statewide and will only move them from Atlantic City elsewhere,” explained Assemblyman Don Guardian. “Our focus has been to make Atlantic City a worldwide destination for both gaming and non-gaming tourism. We need to continue to work on the infrastructure of the city to not only keep our current visitors but attract new ones.”

“The entire State of New Jersey benefits from the gaming revenues in the City of Atlantic City,” said Assemblywoman Claire Swift. “The State pulls a tremendous amount of dollars from the City and spends them on projects outside its limits. Instead of creating in-state competition, why not put some of those current dollars back in projects that will continue to bring visitors to Atlantic City from North Jersey and beyond?”

As recently as 2016, a referendum to permit casinos outside Atlantic City failed 77%-23%. “I look forward to working with my colleagues and the Governor on measures to address the challenges in Atlantic City and provide a foundation for continued growth in the region,” added Senator Polistina.

Atlantic City Mayor, Wife Face Child Abuse Charges!

Atlantic City Mayor Marty Small and his wife were charged Monday with abusing and assaulting their teenage daughter on multiple occasions, including hitting her in the head with a broom and knocking her unconscious.

The Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office said it filed charges against both parents of endangering the welfare of a child.

Marty Small also was charged with making terroristic threats; aggravated assaul, and simple assault. La’Quetta Small was additionally charged with three separate counts of simple assault.

Is SOUTH South Jersey The New GOP Vanguard?

A sprawling four-county area!

Ahhhh . . . the south Jersey shore! 
Most people think of it as the area from Brigantine to Cape May and, no doubt about it, the Atlantic shoreline has an allure all its own. 

But it's more than the sun, sand and surf.  In a broader sense, South Jersey's shore includes the bay as well as the ocean and encompasses Cumberland and parts of Salem county in addition to Atlantic and Cape May counties.

This vast area (stretching from one side of the state to the other) includes farmland, parts of the Pinelands and so many distinct and historic enclaves that it's endlessly fascinating. 

And what we'll call south South Jersey is also emerging as the command center of the conservative movement in the state because it's not just predominantly Republican but it's conservative Republican. 

In fact, you can paint this area a rich, vivid red like the strawberries or tomatoes you might find there on a drive to one of the area's many roadside farm markets.

Republicans have complete control of county government in Atlantic, Cape May, Cumberland and Salem counties and they also hold nearly all of the row offices in those counties. In fact, while the GOP did not do as well as expected statewide in last November's election, Republicans in these four counties did quite well, picking up numerous seats.

And this area is also the home to powerful Republican leaders such as State Senator Mike Testa (who's been hugely successful) and US Congressman Jeff VanDrew. Plus, it has it has a healthy share of incumbent GOP legislators (six in all) and is producing many young, emerging GOP stars who are winning big at the local level. You might say it's got a powerhouse team with a strong bench.

Whether it's the ocean breeze, the scent of the pines, the open space or the rugged individualism that seems to prevail in these parts, the Republicans in south South Jersey are feistier and more conservative than their counterparts in other areas of the state. They seem to have taken Ronald Reagan's mantra to heart: paint in bold colors and don't be afraid to draw clear distinctions between yourself and your opponents. In other words, don't wait to react. Instead, stand tall, go on offense and fight with conviction.

No one should be surprised at any of this as the region has always been defiant and disruptive going all the way back to Congressman Charlie Sandman who routinely bucked the state's starchy GOP establishment. These days that same fighting spirit has been exemplified by another native of the area, Kellyanne Conway. As confidante to President Donald Trump, Conway was said to be instrumental in getting Van Drew to switch to the GOP line, thus flipping a congressional seat.

As let's now forget that President Trump held one of his most successful 2020 rallies in Wildwood, brazenly challenging the assumption that New Jersey is out reach of the GOP's grasp. And now, as we head into the 2024 presidential election Trump is saying he'll be making a play for New Jersey's 14 electoral votes. It's a tall order but Trump has overcome bigger odds in the past. 

Frankly, we wouldn't be surprised if Trump came back to one of New Jersey's southernmost counties to ignite his campaign this time around. He's bound to get a wildly enthusiastic reception 

Hey, we've got nothing against other GOP counties in the state such as Ocean, Monmouth, Sussex and Warren but they just don't seem to have the scrappy brio that south South Jersey brings to the table. Avanti!

24 People To Watch In '24 - New Jersey Edition!

Here it is -- our first ever, exclusive New Jersey edition of People to Watch in the new year. As is our custom, we've listed these in no particular order. And, with this inaugural list we're deliberately favoring young people, Hey, we're always happy to see bright, new, invigorating faces and personalities emerge.

But not all of our choices are young (or even younger) and not all of them are watchable for favorable reasons. A few are watchable because they need to be watched out for, if you know what we mean.

Anyway, here goes:

Joe Labarbera - This Sussex County GOP Chair, proud veteran and enterprising farmer is forging a powerful organization while building cohesion, pride and a winning record. During a time of polarization, he's impressed us because he seems to know how to bring people together. 

Jesse Kurtz - Proof that sometimes nice guys finish first, this Atlantic City Councilman not only shows Republicans how to win in a blue state and deep blue city but he does it with his convictions and principles intact. Formidablé! 

Frank Luna - The original New Jersey energizer, Luna succeeds at almost anything he turns his attention to. In a world full of suspicion and cynicism, Luna is the rare leader who does good just for the sake of it. And that makes for a really "good day" every day.

Holly Schepesi - This dedicated State Senator is influential and worth paying attention to not just because she keeps winning but because she’s irrepressibly down to earth, has good ideas and makes lots of sense. What's next for her? We can't wait to find out.

Jeff Van Drew - A tireless public servant and passionate champion of his Jersey shore district, Van Drew will chair President Trump’s campaign in the Garden State in 2024. Nobody is gutsier, more engaging or better fit for the role.

Jim McGreevey - The disgraced former governor seeks a comeback as Mayor of Jersey City. Salvation? Hey, at the rate things are going, Pope Francis may even proclaim him “Father” Jim! Will wonders never cease?

Melinda Castro Ciattarelli - The former Mrs. is smart, savvy and sophisticated in the ways of Joizee politics. She’s not only seen it all up close, she’s lived it and she can spar with the best of ‘em. If she decides to seek political office, watch out!

Andy Kim - One of the state’s most ambitious pols, he’s also a relentless master of self promotion. He’s like Joizee’s version of Josh Shapiro — a sweet-talking, diminutive tregetour. Abracadabra! 

Ed Durr and Brandon Umba - In terms of temperament, they couldn’t be less alike. But we’re tossing them together because after one term in the state legislature both lost a bid for re-election. But both will continue to speak out and both seem likely to seek office again — and that cheers us on. Avanti!

Tom Kean - To be re-elected this freshman congressman must navigate a fine line between moderation and Trumpster populism. He managed to thread the needle once and goodness knows, he's got a winning pedigree. Can he do it again? Stay tuned.

George Norcross - His bromance with Steve Sweeney (who has just announced a run for governor) means Norcross will not be exiting the political arena anytime soon. Plus, he actually seems to enjoy the spotlight these days — witness the media attention he sought during his recent kerfuffle with the Iggles over an Israeli flag. The man behind the curtain has emerged!

Tammy Murphy - She’s got the name, the endorsements and, in Joizeespeak “the line.” It would all seems to fit together, yes?  But the bigger question is can anyone with a name like Tammy ever be taken seriously?

Paul Kanitra - Don’t be distracted by the broad smile and the 20,000 multi-patterned sport coats. This guy’s no babbling yokel. He’s the real deal, a quick study and destined to be a laser-focused breath of fresh air in the State Assembly. Call him “Can-do Kanitra.”

Dave Fleisher - The incoming Mayor of sprawling Cherry Hill has his work cut out for him as this storied South Jersey bastion has grown a bit threadbare. Fleisher’s got the smarts and experience for the job but does he have the moxie to turn things around. That’s what we’re looking for.

Jarrett Branch - A Blexit and Turning Point activist, this young man gives us great hope not just for the year ahead but for many years to follow. And did we also say we greatly admire his deep and abiding faith? Onward!

Justin Musella - This amiable Parsippany councilman is a young man in a hurry. We like that because he’s also intense, focused and refreshingly heartfelt in his determination to bring people together and do the best for his town. Look for him to advance sooner rather than later.

Tommy DiVito - Everybody seems to love this Cedar Grove New Jersey guy who graduated from Don Bosco, still lives with his parents, loves his mom’s chicken cutlets and just happens to quarterback the New York (Joizee) Giants. Is he a one shot wonder or does he have staying power? Keep watching!

Regina Egea - The President of Garden State Initiative, a public policy think tank, she’s your go to person for what’s wrong with New Jersey’s economy and governance. This is serious stuff. If more people paid attention to her the state wouldn’t be nearly as effed up as it is.

Antwan McClellan - One of the most dynamic members of the New Jersey State Assembly, McClellan is also the Republican Whip, having rapidly assumed a leadership post. Not only does he have a compelling personal story but he is an inspiring speaker and sterling role model -- all good reasons to look to him in the new year.

Ramon Hernandez - This peripatetic guy is New Jersey’s very own Zelig — he’s literally everywhere! Plus, he rivals the sprightly Frank Luna in getting himself pictured with a host of celebrities. But why is he everywhere? Maybe in 2024 we’ll find out.

Kevin Riordan - No journalist knows more about the people, places, problems and pluses of South Jersey than this veteran Philadelphia Inquirer reporter who manages to bring a balanced, human touch to every story he covers. And his social media photos from his Joizee morning walks are the best way too start your day!

Kellyanne Conway - An Atco native and the ultimate Jersey Gal, she soared to the top then took a break to write the bestselling Here’s The Deal. If you haven’t read it, put it at the top of your ’24 reading list. What’s next? Will she follow The Donald back to the White House? Stranger things have happened.

Mike Testa - He’d be worth watching if only for his sartorial style. But he’s focused, diligent, articulate and wonderfully intuitive as well. He’s certainly made his mark in the New Jersey State Senate and has been handily re-elected. Look for an even bigger profile in ’24. This guy is the Total Package.

Brian Fitzherbert - This energetic chair of the Atlantic County Young Republicans (and radio personality on WOND) has been vital in helping to turn the shore area deep red. He’s more than paid his dues and has earned a shot at political office. Go for it, Brian!

And here's one more, just for good measure: Curtis Bashaw - The dashing founder of Cape Resorts and former executive director of the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority is the visionary behind Cape May’s miraculous rebirth. Now he’s mulling a bid for the US Senate. Don’t underestimate this guy. He got a habit of making the impossible possible.

KABOOM! The Winds Are Changing In New Jersey!

New Jersery Statre Senator Declan O’Scanlon, Assemblywoman Victoria Flynn and Assemblyman Gerry Scharfenberger (Monmouth – R’s) released the following statement last night regarding news that the offshore wind energy dealings between Orsted and New Jersey are seemingly collapsing:

 

“Tonight’s announcement by Orsted is not a surprise to those who have been relentless in questioning the Governor’s overzealous “green” energy mandates.

 

For those of us who simply asked reasonable questions about the long-term, practicable and financial viability of the proposed offshore projects, this is an “I told you so” moment.

 

We all would love an unending source of energy with no drawbacks. But the wind projects backed by the Governor and Trenton Democrats never seemed to add up – financially or environmentally.

 

The failure of the Murphy administration to engage in a critical assessment of these projects, and the Democrat-led legislature’s willingness to use taxpayer dollars to fund these risky projects always was suspect to the LD13 team, which is why we called for a moratorium for all offshore wind initiatives back in March 2023.

 

What is a surprise is the feigned outrage by the Governor in response to Orsted's announcement that it is abandoning these projects. It was quite obvious in June that these projects were unsustainable without substantial financial backing by taxpayer dollars. The Governor and the Democratic-led legislature knew this, and yet, rammed a billion-dollar bailout bill through Trenton for Orsted without any regard for N.J. taxpayers.

 

We strongly disagree with the Governor’s position to use litigation to resurrect what is ultimately a horrific deal for our State. Rather than spend more N.J. taxpayer funds to make Orsted "honor their commitment,” as the Governor suggested in his statement, New Jersey should instead take legislative action to prevent any further ill-conceived corporate bailouts for foreign companies immediately. We cannot afford any more back-room dealings by this administration.

 

The urgency for a wholesale change in leadership in N.J. has never been more clear as it is tonight - only with a change in leadership in Trenton will we have a real, logical analysis of the Governor’s green energy schemes and other illogical policies the Democrats have enacted under one-party rule.

 

The winds are shifting in favor of a new, common-sense leadership in Trenton. The first bill passed in lame duck should be AR181 and impose a moratorium on all offshore wind projects. We hope that given how Orsted has treated New Jersey overall, we would expect this bill to receive bipartisan support.”
