Italian American Heritage Month: Donna Lopiano

Donna Lopiano is a pioneering American sports executive, advocate, and educator best known for her groundbreaking work in advancing gender equity in athletics. Born in 1946, she was a standout softball player who went on to become one of the leading voices for women’s sports in the United States. Lopiano served for 18 years as the Director of Women’s Athletics at the University of Texas at Austin, where she built one of the most successful women’s athletic programs in the nation.

Lopiano later became the Chief Executive Officer of the Women’s Sports Foundation, founded by Billie Jean King, where she worked to expand opportunities for girls and women in sports at all levels. Lopiano has also consulted widely through her organization, Sports Management Resources, advising universities and athletic programs on gender equity and compliance.

Throughout her career, she has been recognized with numerous honors, including induction into multiple halls of fame and being named one of the “Most Powerful Women in Sports.” Her lifelong advocacy has helped shape the landscape of modern women’s athletics and ensured lasting progress toward equality on and off the field. 

She received her bachelor’s degree from Southern Connecticut State University, her master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Southern California and is the recipient of five honorary doctoral degrees. She has coached men’s and women’s volleyball, women’s basketball and softball and the Italian national women’s softball team. As an athlete, she participated in 26 national championships in four sports and was a nine-time All-American at four different positions in softball, playing on six national championship teams. She is a member of the National Sports Hall of Fame, the National Softball Hall of Fame and the Connecticut and Texas Women’s Halls of Fame, among others

Nameless Donor Gives Catholic School Half Million

Saint Hubert Catholic High School for Girls in the Tacony section of Philadelphia is proud to announce a generous $500,000 commitment from an anonymous donor. This transformative gift will support the expansion of the school’s College and Career Counseling and Development Office, providing funding for new salaried positions over the next three years.

The donor has expressed a desire to make a meaningful impact on students’ college and career pathways. The gift builds on the momentum of the school’s “Healthcare Careers in 1-2-3” program, which has seen outstanding growth and impact, as well as an impressive $39 million in scholarships awarded annually to students.

Along with the upcoming launch of the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) program in partnership with Holy Family University, this investment will help ensure students have additional resources to pursue their post-secondary goals. The funding will also support the addition of an Assistant Director of Advancement to strengthen the school’s Development Office and contribute to Saint Hubert’s continued growth.

Dr. Lizanne Pando, President of Saint Hubert Catholic High School for Girls, expressed her gratitude and excitement, “Saint Hubert is experiencing remarkable growth in both enrollment and donor engagement, thanks to our devoted donors and hardworking development team.”

“We are building something special together,” Pando continued, “for every Bambie who dreams of a bright future. With over 30,000 alumnae strong, we are a village lifting up young women of faith and integrity—and we will continue to rise together.”

This gift is part of the school’s “Educating Tomorrow’s Leaders TODAY!” campaign, which has raised over $5 million to date, including several historic contributions. The campaign has already resulted in the creation of the Connelly Arts and Design Center and is currently funding the construction of the Susan Muller Anderson ′68 Performing Arts Center.

How PA House Dems Betrayed Female Athletes

From the Pennsylvania Freedom Caucus:

It is with profound disgust that we address the recent decision by House Democrats to re-refer Senate Bill 9 to a different committee. This action represents not only a bureaucratic maneuver which stifled debate and silenced millions of Pennsylvanians, but also a significant setback in the pursuit of equality for countless girls across Pennsylvania. By avoiding the vote, House Democrats have delayed progress, promoted discrimination, and made it very clear that they intend to usurp Federal Title IX law in their pursuit of a woke agenda that 80% of Americans wholeheartedly reject.

The re-referral of Senate Bill 9 is more than a mere procedural delay; it is an abdication of responsibility that undermines the core tenets of our Constitutional Republic. The girls of Pennsylvania deserve better than seeing their rights postponed due to political parlor tricks. We call upon House Democrats to reconsider Senate Bill 9 and to prioritize its passage without further delay.
