Statement by President George W. Bush on Vice President Dick Cheney: 

The death of Richard B. Cheney is a loss to the nation and a sorrow to his friends. 

Laura and I will remember Dick Cheney for the decent, honorable man that he was. History will remember him as among the finest public servants of his generation – a patriot who brought integrity, high intelligence, and seriousness of purpose to every position he held. 

As a young White House aide and chief of staff, a Congressman, a Secretary of Defense, and my Vice President, Dick earned the confidence and high opinion of five presidents. 

 asked him to join my ticket in 2000 after first enlisting him to help me find the best running mate. In our long discussions about the qualities a vice president should have – deep experience, mature judgment, character, loyalty – I realized that Dick Cheney was the one I needed. 

I’m still grateful that he was at my side for the eight years that followed.  Dick was a calm and steady presence in the White House amid great national challenges. I counted on him for his honest, forthright counsel, and he never failed to give his best. He held to his convictions and prioritized the freedom and security of the American people. 

For those two terms in office, and throughout his remarkable career, Dick Cheney’s service always reflected credit on the country he loved. Dick’s love for America was second only to his family.  

Laura and I have shared our deepest sympathies with Vice President Cheney’s wife Lynne and their daughters and grandchildren of whom he was so deeply proud. 

We are praying for Lynne, Liz, Mary, and the Cheney family as they honor a great man.

The REAL Reason Liz Cheney Got The Boot

Liz Cheney lost her congressional seat.

She not only lost -- she lost Big Time. She couldn't even garner 30 percent of the vote in her home state. She lost her seat by 37 percentage points!

Why did this happen? 

Cheney would have you believe that it happened solely because of her opposition to Donald Trump and her vote to impeach him. Nonsense! This happened because Liz Cheney was a Republican congressional leader who was disloyal to the Republican Party! Do you understand this? Do you?

In politics, loyalty is the coin of the realm. In this world, your word and fidelity to the cause define you.  That's all that matters. Cheney was chair of the House Republican Conference. In that capacity, she had a responsible to defend the party when it came under attack. Instead, she did exactly the opposite. She turned on the party and ran into the arms of the Democrats and their stacked, unrepresentative January 6th investigation committee. She became a tool for the Democrats, a showpiece, a vehicle by which a baldly partisan, bogus investigation panel could pretend to be fair and balanced. Yes, she willingly not only played into the hands of the opposition party but she joined them in bashing the party in which she held a leadership position. She was openly, publicly, brazenly and loudly disloyal. 

Liz Cheney betrayed the Republican Party and her colleagues in the party. She took up the cudgels of the Democrats and acted in harmony with them.

That's why she was turned out by Republican voters. That's why she lost her congressional seat.

This was no profile in courage. This was perfidy, pure and simple. And it's despicable.

In The Matter Of Liz Cheney . . .

If you want to be a LEADER of the entire party in Congress then you must ably and effectively LEAD by taking ALL views into consideration and move to unite the party through your example and your leadership. 

You must bring people together. 

Liz Cheney is not doing that. 

You don't LEAD by publicly and repeatedly attacking the party -- or at least a large segment of it. You don't lead by giving aid and comfort to the opposition. 

Liz Cheney has therefore forfeited her leadership position and she will be removed from it. She can, of course, continue to speak out forcefully as an individual GOP member of Congress and she is free as well to switch parties or become an independent of she so chooses.

Eleven Things We Must Remember About September 11

It's sad but true: As the years go by, September 11 will recede from memory.

People who were alive on 9/11/01 will pass away. And those born years from now will have to rely on the stories and recollections of others or whatever winds up in the history books.

Given that secondary recollections are not always reliable and considering that history books have been sanitized by political correctness, we all need to begin to embrace a core set of 9/11 truths now -- things that we need to remember and pass on to future generations.

With that in mind, here (in no particular order) are 11 things you need to remember about September 11:

1) September 11 is better termed an atrocity than a tragedy. When you hear people refer to the events of that day as "tragic," correct them. Tell them what happened was a planned. pre-meditated attack -- atrocious, unconscionable and unforgivable.

2) The attack of September 11 was an affront to all human sensibility. The attack was an act of pure evil. And yes -- there is evil in the world.

3) Those who attacked our nation on September 11 want to annihilate all of us and destroy our very way of life. They are still active and their goals have not changed.

4) Thanks in large part to the policies put in place and the actions taken by President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney, there has been no direct attack on our nation since 9/11/01.

5) Those who attacked America were and are cowards. They hide from others; they operate in darkness or under disguise; they run and they plan their dastardly acts in secret.

6) The victims of September 11 are not martyrs. Rather, they are heroes. They were innocent people living everyday lives and pursuing everyday dreams. To the extent they were able to, they struggled to survive and reached out to help others.

7) The heroic first responders who rushed in to help on that day and beyond exemplify the pinnacle of bravery, honor and self sacrifice. They are patriots.

8) In the words of President Bush: "Whether we bring our enemies to justice or justice to our enemies, justice will be done." This must remain our goal and our mission from September 11, onward.

9) September 11 constituted the worst attack ever ever perpetrated on American soil by a foreign enemy. It was unprecedented.

10) The loss, the anguish, the horror of September 11 lives on among the survivors and among the families and friends of the victims. The suffering has not ended. Lives were forever changed that day. 

11) Spirituality was, is and will always be a part of our response as Americans to that infamous day. Your steadfast commitment to honor the solemn memory of September 11, to seek justice and to comfort those who still suffer must be accompanied by prayer and reflection. Remember. Reaffirm. Resolve.

12) And here's one more thing: Those who cower in the face of our enemies (or the enemies of our allies) and those who retreat and seem all too willing to make a deal with the world's thugs, murderers, terrorists and sponsors of terror -- they are dishonoring the memory of all those who perished on September 11.

'Blockbuster' Hits Streets Tuesday, August 30

Some people say it will have heads exploding in Washington.
Others say it will send the mighty and powerful running for cover.
The whispers about it inside the beltway are beginning to get louder and soon they will turn to shrieks.
It's bold. It's brash. It's unapologetic.

No, I'm not talking about the recent earthquake or the upcoming hurricane Irene.
I'm talking about Dick Cheney's big new book, In My Time. Finally, The Sphinx speaks. And in this book, he's expected to tell all -- all the tales he's been keeping and holding through a long career that made him the penultimate Washington insider and culminated with his two terms as one of the most influential vice presidents in American history.
One thing that's already been revealed: As vice president, Cheney kept a secret letter of resignation hidden away in a safe because there really was no clear constitutional procedure in case he became incapacitated or unable to serve. And Cheney was concerned about his sometimes precarious health and how it might impact his ability to perform. So, the letter was ready in case it was needed and presumably those close to him knew how to access it if necessary. Even in a state of incapacitation, Cheney was determined to be the master of his own fate -- at least as vice president, anyway.

Cheyney: Intelligence Saved Lives

Statement from Vice President Cheney:
The documents released Monday clearly demonstrate that the individuals subjected to Enhanced Interrogation Techniques provided the bulk of intelligence we gained about al Qaeda.
This intelligence saved lives and prevented terrorist attacks. These detainees also, according to the documents, played a role in nearly every capture of al Qaeda members and associates since 2002.
The activities of the CIA in carrying out the policies of the Bush Administration were directly responsible for defeating all efforts by al Qaeda to launch further mass casualty attacks against the United States. The people involved deserve our gratitude. They do not deserve to be the targets of political investigations or prosecutions.
President Obama’s decision to allow the Justice Department to investigate and possibly prosecute CIA personnel, and his decision to remove authority for interrogation from the CIA to the White House, serves as a reminder, if any were needed, of why so many Americans have doubts about this Administration’s ability to be responsible for our nation’s security.

Cheyney Answers Panetta

Dick Cheney released a statement responded to CIA Director Leon Panetta's suggestion that the former vice president's criticism of Obama administration policies means Cheney is wishing for another attack.
"I hope my old friend Leon was misquoted. The important thing is whether the Obama administration will continue the policies that have kept us safe for the last eight years."
Panetta was quoted in a lengthy profile by Jane Mayer in this week's New Yorker.
“I think he smells some blood in the water on the national-security issue,” he told me. “It’s almost, a little bit, gallows politics. When you read behind it, it’s almost as if he’s wishing that this country would be attacked again, in order to make his point. I think that’s dangerous politics.”

UK's Telegraph: Cheney Won

Watching Obama lose his screen on screen duel with Dick Cheney yesterday I was reminded of some lines from Paradise Lost.
"Thus Belial with words clothed in reason's garb
Counselled ignoble ease and peaceful sloth, not peace."
But while the silver-tongued minor devil Belial would no doubt have approved the President's new surrender-monkey "realist" approach to the war on terror, I doubt he would have been so impressed with his oratorical skills. Never mind the bizarre reputation Obama has acquired as a great public speaker: his speeches are fast beginning to sound almost as excruciating as anything in his predecessor's "enhanced interrogation program."
Yeah, I know, I know. I too was taken in when I first heard him speak. I remember thinking when I heard that measured, steady voice with its pleasant but authoritative timbre that here was a guy fit to govern the world. He sounded cool. Clint Eastwood "Make my day" cool.
Now, though, that novelty has worn off. Now, it's becoming clear that this carefully worked, glacial poise is all there is to Obama. He's just a hollow man spouting empty rhetoric.
Compare and contrast the flatulent pomposity of Obama's speech with Cheney's angry, from-the-heart, tell-it-like-it-is riposte. No one is accusing Cheney of being the next Marc Antony but as Toby Harnden rightly says, he had some strong points to make and his audience got the message.
Obama's speech on the other hand, was the usual grandiloquent exercise in high-sounding nothingness. Apart from the familiar gangsta-rap-style boasting about how big and important he now is ("I took an oath as your Commander In Chief.."), all he had to offer were platitudes designed - a la Belial - to make inaction and pusillanimity in the war on terror look the only sensible course.
One of his favourite techniques is the false opposition, as here:
"On one side of the spectrum are those who make little allowance for the the unique challenges posed by terrorism and would almost never put national security over transparency. And on the other end of the spectrum are those who can embrace a view that can be summarised in two words: anything goes. Both sides may be sincere in their views. But neither is right."
Except nobody in the world cleaves to either of these positions. They have been conjured from thin air by Obama - and his trusty teleprompter - in order to make out that anyone who disagrees with his woolly centrist position must perforce be some kind of whacko extremist nut job.
Maybe when you're out on the campaign trail there's a certain sense in this kind of airy nonsense: you don't after all want to pin yourself down to a position your opponents can trap you on; you just want to generate a general feeling of benevolence towards you.
But when you're president of the USA, this approach really doesn't wash. You have responsibilities. Your words have consequences. A deadpan delivery is no longer enough.

Round One: Cheney Wins

On paper, Obama should be an easy victor in his duel with Cheney; Obama is viewed favorably by about 60 percent of the public, Cheney by about 25 percent. And yet Cheney seems to be winning this fight. Senate Democrats, rebelling against Obama, voted against funding his plan to close the Guantanamo Bay prison. Obama himself backed down from his plan to release photographs of prisoner abuse. And he's gone back and forth on whether to prosecute or investigate those accused of authorizing torture.
For the moment, at least, Obama's intellectual arguments can't match Cheney's visceral rage. Even if Cheney can't reverse the new administration's policies, he's building a case for Obama to be blamed if there is a terrorist attack on his watch. Repeatedly yesterday, Cheney boasted that his policies "had everything to do with preventing another 9/11 on our watch."
At the very least, Cheney has gotten the president's attention. After Cheney's speech was scheduled last week, the White House booked an Obama speech for the same time on the same topic. His speech was scheduled to begin at 10:10 a.m., but Obama delayed that until 10:30 -- exactly when Cheney was supposed to speak across town. In the AEI conference room, those awaiting Cheney watched CNN's broadcast of the Obama speech on a projection screen.
The president seemed slightly off his game. He introduced Defense Secretary Robert Gates as "William Gates," confusing his Cabinet member with the Microsoft founder. And he was thrown off by an apparent teleprompter malfunction at the end of his speech. Mostly, though, Obama struck a defensive tone. . . .
In an echo of the with-us-or-against-us theme, Cheney told Obama: "In the fight against terrorism, there is no middle ground."
Cheney, battling with respiratory congestion, listed the many things that have made him dyspeptic. The "so-called truth commission." The "feigned outrage based on a false narrative" of the opposition. The administration soliciting "applause in Europe for closing Guantanamo." The "euphemisms" he thinks Democrats are using to sanitize terrorism.
"Tired of calling it a war? Use any term you prefer," he growled. "Just remember: It is a serious step to begin unraveling some of the very policies that have kept our people safe since 9/11."
A swift uppercut to Obama's chin! Nine more 9/11 jabs and Cheney was ready for his rubdown.

Cheney, speaking today to the American Enterprise Institute:
For all the partisan anger that still lingers, our administration will stand up well in history – not despite our actions after 9/11, but because of them. And when I think about all that was to come during our administration and afterward – the recriminations, the second-guessing, the charges of “hubris” – my mind always goes back to that moment.
To put things in perspective, suppose that on the evening of 9/11, President Bush and I had promised that for as long as we held office – which was to be another 2,689 days – there would never be another terrorist attack inside this country. Talk about hubris – it would have seemed a rash and irresponsible thing to say. People would have doubted that we even understood the enormity of what had just happened. Everyone had a very bad feeling about all of this, and felt certain that the Twin Towers, the Pentagon, and Shanksville were only the beginning of the violence.
Of course, we made no such promise. Instead, we promised an all-out effort to protect this country. We said we would marshal all elements of our nation’s power to fight this war and to win it. We said we would never forget what had happened on 9/11, even if the day came when many others did forget. We spoke of a war that would “include dramatic strikes, visible on TV, and covert operations, secret even in success.” We followed through on all of this, and we stayed true to our word.
To the very end of our administration, we kept al-Qaeda terrorists busy with other problems. We focused on getting their secrets, instead of sharing ours with them. And on our watch, they never hit this country again. After the most lethal and devastating terrorist attack ever, seven and a half years without a repeat is not a record to be rebuked and scorned, much less criminalized. It is a record to be continued until the danger has passed.

Cheyney Speaks Truth To Power

From Vice President Cheney's remarks now being delivered to the American Enetrprise Institute:
It’s hard to imagine a worse precedent, filled with more possibilities for trouble and abuse, than to have an incoming administration criminalize the policy decisions of its predecessors. . . .
We hear from some quarters nothing but feigned outrage based on a false narrative. In my long experience in Washington, few matters have inspired so much contrived indignation and phony moralizing as the interrogation methods applied to a few captured terrorists.
I might add that people who consistently distort the truth in this way are in no position to lecture anyone about “values.” Intelligence officers of the United States were not trying to rough up some terrorists simply to avenge the dead of 9/11. We know the difference in this country between justice and vengeance. Intelligence officers were not trying to get terrorists to confess to past killings; they were trying to prevent future killings. From the beginning of the program, there was only one focused and all-important purpose. We sought, and we in fact obtained, specific information on terrorist plans.
Those are the basic facts on enhanced interrogations. And to call this a program of torture is to libel the dedicated professionals who have saved American lives, and to cast terrorists and murderers as innocent victims. What’s more, to completely rule out enhanced interrogation methods in the future is unwise in the extreme. It is recklessness cloaked in righteousness, and would make the American people less safe.

Another term out there that slipped into the discussion is the notion that American interrogation practices were a “recruitment tool” for the enemy. On this theory, by the tough questioning of killers, we have supposedly fallen short of our own values. This recruitment-tool theory has become something of a mantra lately, including from the President himself. And after a familiar fashion, it excuses the violent and blames America for the evil that others do. It’s another version of that same old refrain from the Left, “We brought it on ourselves.”
