The REAL Meaning Of Work And Labor . . . .

This Labor Day message was posted quite a number of years ago from then Philadelphia Archbishop Charles J. Chaput. It ramains exceptionally relevant:

Today we celebrate Labor Day. Traditionally, it's a day of rest set aside to celebrate the American worker's contributions to society, but this holiday is much more than that. It's an opportunity to recommit ourselves to promoting and protecting the God-given dignity of everyone.Work is meant to be for the sake of the family. We do not undertake labor for its own sake, but as a way to grow toward lasting and meaningful realities in our lives and communities. Parents are called to be providers and educators to their children, passing down essential values and creating a home environment in which all members of the family can be fully present to one another and grow. Dignity-filled work and the fruits of that labor nourish families, communities, and the common good.This Labor Day and always, let us pray, reflect, and act, seeking to restore our work and relationships to the honored place God has ordained for them. May the Lord give you peace.

A Morally Confused Medical Comparison!

 

A very special message from catholicvote.org:   If you didn’t see Jesse Watters interviewing Michigan Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed on Fox News last night, you missed a revealing moment that cuts beneath the usual policy debate to something more fundamental.   El-Sayed showed himself to be precisely what Michigan does not need in elected office. Beyond exposing a shallow grasp of basic economics, he made a comparison so medically and morally confused that it lays bare the deeper problem with where certain ideological currents in our politics have arrived.   In an exchange about so-called “gender change” surgery, Watters asked El-Sayed whether he supported allowing a doctor to surgically remove a young boy's male anatomy. El-Sayed's response was not a defense of children. It was a deflection: "Are you circumcised?"   Watters couldn't believe what he was hearing. His reply, "circumcision is different than castration," expressed what most reasonable people watching already knew.   He is right. And the distinction matters enormously.   El-Sayed, a physician with an M.D. from Columbia University, placed a minor, medically routine procedure that does nothing to alter the function of the human body on the same moral and clinical level as a surgery that permanently destroys a child's capacity to father children.   Circumcision is not castration. One has thousands of years of medical and cultural precedent; the other is an irreversible alteration of a healthy body belonging to a child who has no say in the matter and no ability to reclaim what has been taken once it is gone.   This is not a difference of medical opinion, but a failure of basic moral reasoning. And it reveals something about where a particular ideology has arrived: a place where the healthy bodies of children are treated as problems awaiting correction.   People who reason this way have disqualified themselves from public trust.    The Watters interview is emblematic of where we stand as a society and of where we must hold the line. Not merely on the political question of who wins in November, but on something prior to politics: the recognition that children are not experiments and that no movement's preferred conclusions change what every serious moral tradition has always understood about the protection of the young.   In other words, natural law does not require a theology degree to understand.   There are economic and policy reasons aplenty to reject Abdul El-Sayed's candidacy. But what last night's interview made plain is that the deepest stakes in elections like this one are not economic. They concern what we believe about the human person and whether the people we send to govern us are willing to protect children even when an ideology tells them not to.   Michigan voters, the ball is in your court.   Go forward bravely,

How Babe Ruth's Catholic Faith Sustained Him

Facing a health crisis, legendary baseball great Babe Ruth wrote about confession, communion, and the Miraculous Medal in an autobiographical article published in Guideposts magazine in October 1948.

Here's what he said:

“In December, 1946, I was in French Hospital, New York, facing a serious operation. Paul Carey, one of my oldest and closest friends, was by my bed one night. - They’re going to operate in the morning, Babe, Paul said. -Don’t you think you ought to put your house in order? -I didn’t dodge the long, challenging look in his eyes. I knew what he meant. For the first time, I realized that death might strike me out. I nodded, and Paul got up, called in a chaplain, and I made a full confession. -I’ll return in the morning and give you Holy Communion, the chaplain said, -But you don’t have to fast.

-I’ll fast, I said. I didn’t have even a drop of water. -As I lay in bed that evening, I thought to myself what a comforting feeling to be free from fear and worries. I now could simply turn them over to God. Later on, my wife brought in a letter from a little kid in Jersey City. ‘Dear Babe,’ he wrote, ‘Everybody in the seventh grade class is pulling and praying for you. I am enclosing a medal, which if you wear will make you better. Your pal—Mike Quinlan. P.S. I know this will be your 61st homer. You’ll hit it.’ -I asked them to pin the Miraculous Medal to my pyjama coat. I’ve worn the medal constantly ever since. I’ll wear it to my grave.”

MASS ABORTION LAW: Demonic, Pure Evil!

Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey just signed a law removing virtually every last remaining protection for unborn children after 24 weeks.   Children in all stages of pregnancy — up to the moment of birth — can be aborted based solely on “the professional judgment of a physician.”   Healthy, viable babies who can feel pain and survive outside the womb are allowed by law to be killed.   The number of young, applauding women surrounding the governor as she signed the bill — potential mothers and perhaps already mothers — is as alarming as the legislation itself.   As the mother of a child born at 35 weeks, it is beyond heartbreaking.

Governor Healey, who has publicly referred to her Catholicism on X as the inspiration for her policies, celebrated the new law. She proclaimed: “As long as I’m governor, abortion will remain safe, legal, and accessible in Massachusetts. You have my word.”   This is an absolute inversion of the good. Every child is created in the image of God.   Governor Healey has spoken about having priests at the family table. She has even met the Holy Father.   Now, she’s encouraging the people of her state to deliberately kill unborn children — up to the moment of birth.   The Catholic Church has consistently proclaimed that human life must be protected from the moment of conception. Direct abortion is never justified. In fact, abortion is a grave moral evil.   And Governor Healey’s actions are a grave scandal.   Please join me in praying for the unborn children of Massachusetts.   Go forward bravely,
