Emperor Of Mexico Buried In Center City Philly?
Who knew that an Emperor of Mexico is buried in Philadelphia in a tiny burial ground next to a church and within the shadow of City Hall? Countless people pass the sight every day and never take notice of it. But tomorrow, it will be recognized. Here are the details:
Saint John the Evangelist Church in Philadelphia will host a group of dignitaries from Mexico to visit the graves of the family of the former Emperor of Mexico, Agustin de Iturbide. This visit is one stop on the dignitaries’ travels to celebrate the
200th anniversary of Mexican independence.

Editor’s Note: Agustin de Iturbide was a military general who led Mexican forces in their war of independence against Spain, winning the war and independence in 1821. General Iturbide was made Emperor of Mexico. The Empress and her children fled to the United States after the Emperor was assassinated by political rivals in 1824. The family members were parishioners at Saint John the Evangelist in Philadelphia for many years and are buried in the parish's cemetery.

Special Efforts And Prayers; More Will Be Needed!
Saint Patrick Parish in Norristown (Montgomery County) will hold a special Mass for the intention of the people of Mexico and Puerto Rico affected by recent major natural disasters.
The parish is home to hundreds of Mexican immigrants, many of whom are from Puebla, the epicenter of Wednesday’s earthquake. Many other parishioners are from Puerto Rico, currently being devastated by Hurricane Maria.
A special collection will be taken up for those victims and continued relief efforts.

Donald J. Trump has just issued the following statement:
“It is unfortunate that my comments have been misconstrued as a categorical attack against people of Mexican heritage. I am friends with and employ thousands of people of Mexican and Hispanic descent. The American justice system relies on fair and impartial judges. All judges should be held to that standard. I do not feel that one’s heritage makes them incapable of being impartial, but, based on the rulings that I have received in the Trump University civil case, I feel justified in questioning whether I am receiving a fair trial.
Over the past few weeks, I have watched as the media has reported one inaccuracy after another concerning the ongoing litigation involving Trump University. There are several important facts the public should know and that the media has failed to rep
Throughout the litigation my attorneys have continually demonstrated that students who participated in Trump University were provided a substantive, valuable education based upon a curriculum developed by professors from Northwestern University, Columbia Business School, Stanford University and other respected institutions. And, the response from students was overwhelming. Over a five year period, more than 10,000 paying students filled out surveys giving the courses high marks and expressing their overwhelming satisfaction with Trump University’s programs.

When asked “how could Trump University help to meet [her] goals”, she simply stated “[c]ontinue to offer great classes.” Once the plaintiffs’ lawyers realized how disastrous a witness she was, they asked to have her removed from the case. Over my lawyers’ objections, the judge granted the plaintiffs’ motion, but allowed the case to continue.
Art Cohen, a lead plaintiffs in the litigation, completed a survey in which he not only rated Trump University’s three-day seminar “excellent” in virtually every category, but went so far as to indicate that he would “attend another Trump University seminar” and even “recommend Trump University seminars to a friend.” When asked how Trump University could improve the seminar, Mr. Cohen’s only suggestion was to “[h]ave lunch sandwiches brought in” and make the lunch break 45 minutes.
Former student Bob Giullo, who has been critical of Trump University in numerous interviews and negative advertisements from my political opponents, also expressed his satisfaction, rating Trump University’s programs “excellent” in every category. When asked how Trump University could improve its programs, Mr. Giullo simply asked that students be provided “more comfortable chairs.”
Indeed, these are just a few of literally thousands of positive surveys, all of which can be viewed online at www.98percentapproval.com.
For those students who decided that Trump University’s programs were not for them, the company had a generous refund policy, offering a full refund to any student who asked for their money back within 3 days of signing up for a program or by the end of the first day of any multi-day program, whichever came later.
Normally, legal issues in a civil case would be heard in a neutral environment. However, given my unique circumstances as nominee of the Republican Party and the core issues of my campaign that focus on illegal immigration, jobs and unfair trade, I have concerns as to my ability to receive a fair trial.
I am fighting hard to bring jobs back to the United States. Many companies – like Ford, General Motors, Nabisco, Carrier – are moving production to Mexico. Drugs and illegal immigrants are also pouring across our border. This is bad for all Americans, regardless of their heritage.
Due to what I believe are unfair and mistaken rulings in this case and the Judge’s reported associations with certain professional organizations, questions were raised regarding the Obama appointed Judge’s impartiality. It is a fair question. I hope it is not the case.
While this lawsuit should have been dismissed, it is now scheduled for trial in November. I do not intend to comment on this matter any further. With all of the thousands of people who have given the courses such high marks and accolades, we will win this case!”

“Today, we pause to remember the landmark victory of the Mexican Army at the Battle of Puebla,” Gleason said. “Cinco de Mayo is an annual reminder of the importance of preserving freedom and liberty in a society. It is a time of great joy throughout our Commonwealth, and provides us all with an opportunity to learn more about such an important chapter in history.
“In addition, Cinco de Mayo serves as an chance to commemorate the wonderful contributions of the Mexican-American community in both in our country as well as the Keystone State. Today’s celebrations provide us with an occasion to reflect on the important role Mexican-Americans have had in shaping our Commonwealth as well as our country.

FLUB: Pope Stumbles On 'Mexicanization'
The Director of the Holy See Press Office, Fr. Federico Lombardi, S.J., announced yesterday afternoon that the Secretariat of State has sent a Note to the Mexican ambassador to the Holy See to clarify that in using the expression “avoid Mexicanization”, the Pope did not in any way intend to offend the Mexican population, for whom he holds special affection, nor to underestimate the commitment of the Mexican government in its fight against narcotics trafficking.
As is known, the expression “avoid Mexicanization” was used by the Pope in an email of a strictly private and informal nature, in response to an Argentine friend who is deeply involved in the battle against drug abuse, who had used the phrase.
The Note demonstrates that evidently the Pope intended only to emphasize the seriousness of the phenomenon of the drug trafficking that afflicts Mexico and other countries in Latin America. It is precisely this importance that has made the fight against drug trafficking a priority for the government; to combat violence and restore peace and serenity to Mexican families, acting on the causes at the root of this scourge.
It is a phenomenon that, like others in Latin America, that the Pope has drawn attention to on various occasions, including in his encounters with the bishops, emphasizing the need to adopt policies of cooperation and collaboration at all levels.

Discovered: Two New Dining Delights By-The-Sea!
No matter how many times we've been to beautiful Hilton Head Island, we keep making new discoveries.
And, given the island's endless culinary choices many of our best discoveries are restaurants.
This time we discovered a great new Mexican eatery and "rediscovered" a tried-and-true island dining mecca that we somehow left off our list.
Both are certified standouts.
The first is Holy Tequila, a product of the people who produced Hilton Head's best burger at Charbar.
Holy Tequila bills itself as a "joint" but that's all part of the restaurant's tongue-in-cheek approach. It doesn't take itself too seriously and that's refreshing for a place that really is one of the most stylish Mexican eateries you'll find anywhere. Here, you'll discover a delightful blend of Mexican street food and new American flavors including gourmet tacos, quesadillas, salads and smalls plates, all reasonably priced. We highly reccomend the crispy shrimp tacos. We've never tasted anything like them anywhere. They are scrumptious! And the cheese rice is unforgettable.
Our second standout is a bit more upscale.
Actually, it's an island classic that's still going strong (and better than ever) after more than 25 years.
It's Charlie's L'etoille Verte (Charlie's Green Star) and it is exactly what it sounds like - a fine French-influenced American restaurant. The nautical green star recalls a sailor's reliance on celestial navigation. Since Charlie’s is the only restaurant on the island that writes its entire menu daily based on the freshest local seafood available, the star is appropriate. But you'll also find beef and poultry dishes here as well.
Dining at Charlie's is like dining within the cozy confines of a French country home. The atmosphere is positively charming and every detail has been carefully tended to. So, it delivers the highest standards of French cuisine but with American familiarity and genuine friendliness.
We enjoyed the flounder sautéed meuniere and it was heavenly.

How You Can Help Free Sgt. Tahmooressi
Here is a very special message from Jill Tahmooressi, mother of Sgt. Tahmooressi:
Andrew's second court hearing was last week and instead of setting him free, Mexico is keeping him in prison for who knows how much longer... some have said it may be 8 more months.
I cannot put into words the pain I am feeling, but I cannot even begin to imagine what Andrew feels. I know he is so grateful for your support and prayers, and his faith is giving him strength during this terrible time but it breaks my heart to see him suffering in this Mexican jail.
Even though thousands have signed the White House petition, President Obama has yet to act on Andrew's behalf to set him free. From where we sit, the executive branch has totally abandoned him.
I need your help to keep Andrew's spirits high. Please tell your friends and family about Andrew's story.
I will not abandon him, but I'm just a mom from Florida. I'm not a diplomat, or an international lawyer, or a strong Marine like my son. I need help to get Andrew out of jail and to bring him home with dignity and for that I must hire talented lawyers... lawyers that I can't afford and that our government isn't willing to provide.
And once Andrew is finally set free, and I am praying that that is sooner than later, he will unfortunately be facing nearly insurmountable legal bills. I know bills at home are tight with every family and I hate asking for money, but any amount you can afford will go immediately towards defraying the massive costs and bills Andrew will face once he is freed.
Your donation today will go immediately towards helping Andrew's Liberty Fund.
I am absolutely devastated but I am trying to stay strong for Andrew. I hope you will stand with me in praying for him and his safety.

La Hacienda Mexican Fare On Hilton Head Island
We've always recommended San Miguel's as one of the best spots for Mexican fare on Hilton Head Island.
But San Miguel's in Shelter Cove Harbor can often be crowded and a bit hysterical, especially on special harbor festival nights during the high season. And, we've got to be honest about this -- on our recent visits to San Miguel's we haven't been exactly bowled over. The food and service seem to have slipped a bit. It's not like we'll never return to San Miguel's. We will. It's just that we wanted more choices.
So, this led us to an alternative -- La Hacienda on Palmetto Bay Road just off Sea Pines Circle.
And we were delighted with the results: A big luscious, frozen, potent peach margarita; tacos, enchiladas, tostada and a double order of rice. And the tortilla chips and salsa were fresh and wonderful as well.

Good food; more-than-reasonable tariff; friendly service; bright, colorful atmosphere.

Enoforcement Chiefs: Obama Border Policy = Chaos
Sen. Jim Sessions hosted a news conference with top officials from two unions that represent U.S. immigration law enforcement agencies.
ICE agent Chris Crane is President of the National Immigration and Customs Enforcement Council, the union representing America's more than 7,000 ICE agents and personnel. Border Patrol agent George McCubbin, III is President of the National Border Patrol Council, the union representing America's more than 17,000 border agents and personnel.
From Sen. Sessions' remarks (forthcoming in a video tomorrow):
"The Administration claims it has diligently enforced immigration law and that the border is 'more secure than ever.' But those on the front lines know this to be untrue. They see the violence, chaos and lawlessness. They have lost confidence in the leadership of their agencies...
As you will hear today, this administration has engaged in a sustained, relentless effort to undermine America's immigration laws. They have handcuffed and muffled those charged with protecting the public safety and the integrity of our borders. Such action has not only weakened our security but our democracy...

Hispanic Takes Fall For 'O'
Louis Caldera, the son of Mexican immigrants who graduated from West Point and Harvard and later served as Secretary of the Army and White House Military Officer has taken the fall for the recent Obama Air Force One ground zero flyover fiasco.In a typical Friday announcement designed to minimize media attention the White House said that the President has accepted Caldera's resignation as White House Military Officer.
Caldera was fingered for the public relations fiasco arising from the April 27 flyover, which was designed to replace a publicity photo of Air Force One flying past Mount Rushmore with a similar shot of Obama's 747 jumbo jet over the Statue of Liberty.
Many White House officials were angry at Caldera over the stunt and it became evident early on that he was to be the likely scapegoat. "This (incident) was just plain stupid," one Obama aide said as people close to the President began point fingers.
Of course, higher ups (including the President, the Vice President and the Secretary of Defense) had no intention of accepting even partial blame for the incident.
In typical Washington fashion a convenient fall guy was found.
Secretary of Defense Robert Gates did apologize for the flyover in a letter Tuesday to Sen. John McCain, who posted the memo on his Senate Web site Friday but that's as far as it went.
"I am concerned that this highly public and visible mission did not include an appropriate public affairs plan nor adequate review and approval by senior Air Force and DOD [Department of Defense] officials," Gates said in the letter.
"We deeply regret the anxiety and alarm that resulted from this mission," he added.
Gates' apology signaled that the other shoe would soon drop.
It's Friday. The shoe dropped. Caldera is gone.

Who'da Thunk It?

In Mexico, however, the toll has been much worse. "About 70 deaths out of roughly 1,000 cases represents a fatality rate of about 7 percent," the AP notes. This is far higher than the 2.5% fatality rate from the Spanish flu pandemic of 1918-19, although the latter was many orders of magnitude more widespread, killing 40 million people world-wide.
"The Mexican rate sounds terrifying," the AP writes. "But it's possible that far more than 1,000 people have been infected with the virus and that many had few if any symptoms." Which is somewhat, though not entirely, reassuring.
The AP dispatch is titled "Swine Flu Worse in Mexico Than US, but Why?" There's no definitive answer, but here's one of the possibilities:
Access to medical care has been an issue in Asia, where a rare bird flu--which does not spread easily from person-to-person--has killed more than 200 over the last several years. Maybe Mexican patients have also had trouble getting medical care or antiviral drugs, some have speculated--even though the government provides health care.
Wouldn't this paragraph make more sense if it ended ". . . because the government provides health care"?
