Manufacturing in U.S. expands at fastest pace since May 2004

American factories expanded at the fastest rate since 2004 this February, according to figures from the Institute for Supply Management. The numbers, released Thursday, show that 15 of 18 manufacturing industries indicated growth last month.

U.S. consumer confidence rises to highest level since November 2000

According to nonprofit organization The Conference Board, American consumers today are the most confident they have been since 2000. The business research group’s index showed that a strong job market is boosting confidence as unemployment has stayed at a 17-year low.

U.S. real disposable incomes rose in January by the most in five years due to tax cuts

“Americans’ wallets fattened in January by the most in five years” because of recent tax cuts, suggesting that greater spending power may keep boosting the U.S. economy this quarter. “The reduction in taxes helped boost the saving rate to 3.2%, the highest since August, from 2.5% in December, which was the lowest since 2007.”

White House defends ICE, Border Patrol from California attacks

The Trump Administration is backing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials, who the mayor of Oakland, California, challenged recently by tipping off illegal immigrants of upcoming sweeps by Federal authorities. Vice President Mike Pence called federal immigration officials “heroes” at the Department of Homeland Security’s 15th anniversary event this week.

While speaking at the White House’s opioids summit this week, President Trump called for America to be “very strong on penalties” given to drug dealers and pushers. The President discussed a variety of other ways to combat the crisis, as well, including potential lawsuits against unscrupulous opioid companies.

HHS Secretary Alex Azar commits to approaching opioid epidemic as a 'medical challenge' rather than moral failing

“Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar stressed that the Trump administration views the opioid epidemic as a disease rather than a moral failing,” Kimberly Leonard reports, “and it will take that approach in its policy implementation.” Secretary Azar also highlighted the Administration’s “promotion of drug courts, which place people with addictions who have committed crimes into substance abuse treatment rather than jail.”

The Millionaire Who Lives In A VW Van

Maybe we're a bit late, but we've just recently caught up with the story of Daniel Norris. 

As a Major League pitcher and cancer survivor, Daniel Norris is used to taking some hard knocks. But living out of his van during the offseason provides a sort of “reset” button for the everyday grind. The Tennessee native now plays with the Detroit Tigers and we presume he's ready to give up his van for awhile and re-inhabit the "loneliness" of the mound. BTW: Norris is a devout Christian who was baptized in his baseball uniform and who lives on an $800 a month allowance he doles out to himself. Fascinating!

Most Americans think the death penalty is a fair punishment if the man accused of killing 17 people during a school shooting in Florida is convicted, and nearly half don’t think, in general, that leniency should be granted to suspected criminals if they are found to be mentally ill.

'A Great Passion For Those That Were Neglected'

His heart was in America 

“Billy Graham carried his message around the world, but his heart, as [his son] Franklin will tell you, was always in America,” President Donald J. Trump said Wednesday as he stood near the casket of the Reverend Billy Graham, who lay in honor earlier this week at the United States Capitol.

Today, Rev. Graham’s funeral will be held at the Billy Graham Library in Charlotte, North Carolina. On Wednesday, American leaders had an opportunity to pay tribute to the man who inspired millions the world over with his faith.

“He took his message to the poorest places, to the downtrodden and to the brokenhearted, to inmates in prison, and to the overlooked and the neglected,” President Trump told those gathered in the Capitol Rotunda. “He felt a great passion for those that were neglected.”

Rev. Graham is only the fourth private citizen to lie in honor at the U.S. Capitol in Washington.

The pain beneath the headlines 

First Lady Melania Trump opened a White House summit on opioids yesterday by putting the Administration’s extensive work to combat the crisis into context.

“Our unified goal is that of helping all who have been affected by drug addiction,” the First Lady said. She then shared a letter from Betty Henderson, a mother who lost her son to drugs. Ms. Henderson joined the First Lady at the front of the room.

“The day after my son’s death, I had to go to the medical examiner’s office to claim his body,” Ms. Henderson wrote. “No mother should ever have to claim their child’s body.”

Yesterday’s summit brought together leaders from across the Administration and experts from throughout the country to discuss education and prevention, treatment and recovery, and law enforcement and interdiction relating to opioids. President Trump spoke with families at the event, and numerous Cabinet officials joined to share policy solutions and ideas from their teams.

Homeland Security turns 15 

“I was there on Capitol Hill on 9/11. I watched the Congress come together, setting politics completely aside to forge this Department,” Vice President Mike Pence said yesterday at a ceremony to honor the 15th anniversary of the Department of Homeland Security.

• Enforcing our Nation’s immigration laws, securing its borders, and preventing terrorists, drug dealers, and violent criminals from entering our country 
• Performing countless search-and-rescue missions across America in the midst of hurricanes, storms, floods, fires, and mudslides

“This Department was forged in the crucible of crisis. But over the past 15 years it has distinguished itself as a cornerstone of America’s national security and law enforcement enterprise,” the Vice President said.

Dancing The Night Away For All The Right Reasons!

Over 200 students from Saint Hubert Catholic High School for Girls in the Tacony section of Philadelphia are coming together to participate in their first ever Dance-A-Rama. The evening’s festivities will raise funds for Our Lady of Confidence Day School (OLC), one of four Archdiocesan Schools of Special Education, as well as the Division of Nephrology at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP).

The Dance-A-Rama was planned by student council officers and has received the support of the school’s community including: school leadership, administrators, teachers, alumnae association, parents, local businesses, as well as the Archdiocesan Schools of Special Education and the Division of Nephrology at CHOP.

In addition to dancing, throughout the evening, attendees will hear from speakers who will share their personal connection to OLC and CHOP.

Students from Saint Hubert’s will also participate in arts and crafts activities including making cards for OLC students and patients receiving care from CHOP’s Division of Nephrology. Each student participating in the Dance-A-Rama will wear a green shirt with blue lettering. The color green represents kidney disease awareness and the color blue is OLC’s school color.

Through donations secured by members of the student council, over $4,000.00 has been raised thus far. It is projected that students will exceed their original goal of raising $5,000.00 by the conclusion of the event.
