The proclamation states, “Outrageously, in recent years, Christopher Columbus has been a prime target of a vicious and merciless campaign to erase our history, slander our heroes, and attack our heritage.” It also highlights the shared values between the United States and Italy, describing the relationship as “a special bond rooted in the timeless values of faith, family, and freedom.”
Signed on October 9, the proclamation reaffirms Columbus Day’s national status and rejects efforts to elevate Indigenous Peoples’ Day as a federal alternative.
