Italian American Heritage Month: JoAnn Falletta

JoAnn Falletta is an acclaimed American conductor celebrated for her dynamic artistry, imaginative programming, and trailblazing leadership in the orchestral world. Born on February 27, 1954, in Queens, New York, she began her musical journey as a classical guitarist before turning to conducting—a field in which women were then rare. Falletta earned degrees from the Mannes College of Music and The Juilliard School, where she studied under legendary conductor Jorge Mester.

In 1999, she became music director of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, transforming it into one of the nation’s most vibrant regional orchestras and earning widespread recognition for championing new American music. She has also served as music director of the Virginia Symphony Orchestra and principal conductor of the Ulster Orchestra in Northern Ireland.

Renowned for her expressive style and commitment to contemporary composers, Falletta has recorded more than 120 albums, many of which have received Grammy Awards and nominations. Beyond the podium, she is known as a passionate advocate for arts education, a mentor for young conductors, and a pioneering figure who has helped open doors for women in classical music.
