That was considered a helluva run in those days and the show was beginning to feel a bit tired. Carol Channing, the original Dolly, had already been gone from the show for more than a year and was replaced by a series of well known performers.
But something was missing -- something that would give the show a unique boost.
That's when producer David Merrick decided to start all over again, recasting the entire show, beginning with the legendary Pearl Bailey as Dolly and backing her up with an all Black cast.
The result was a whole new show -- reimagined and absolutely spellbinding! And propelling it onward was one of the most imaginative, poignant and heartfelt Dollys ever as Pearl Bailey dominated the stage.
This is the magic of Broadway!
