Philadelphia Archbishop Nelson J. Pérez recently joined a group of employees, volunteers, and supporters from Catholic Social Services of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia (CSS) for a special meal with 100 men, women and families served by CSS’s Housing and Homeless Services programs.
The monthly meal was part of the newly launched “Bishop’s Dinner” initiative by CSS taking place at Saint John’s Hospice (SJH). The initiative aims to give Archbishop Pérez and his four auxiliary bishops the opportunity to share food and fellowship with the marginalized in Philadelphia.
Located in Center City Philadelphia, SJH is a ministry of CSS which has served the needs of homeless men in Center City for over half a century. SJH provides crucial and life-sustaining services with dignity, respect, and compassion to men experiencing homelessness in Philadelphia.
Prior to the meal, Archbishop Pérez and Most Reverend Edward M. Deliman, Auxiliary Bishop of Philadelphia, greeted volunteers, staff, and diners. Archbishop Pérez blessed all those in attendance.
In reflecting on the meal, Archbishop Pérez said, “I was honored to take part in the “Bishop’s Dinner” at Saint John’s Hospice and join with all those who are served by Catholic Social Services and this beacon of hope and respite in Center City!”
The initiative aims to create a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere for all featuring sit-down style meals, musical entertainment, calls for prayer intentions, and more with a particular focus on engaging and encountering our neighbors in need.
