Philadelphia Has Lost A Luminous Legend!

Classy. Erudite. Always attentive!

Nobody knew Philly better, cared more deeply or covered it more thoroughly. She was Old School through 'n through and the sort of fearless trailblazer we sadly no longer find in our midst.

If you pitched a story to her and she followed through, THEN you knew for that one moment that you hit the jackpot.

Proud to have known her. God rest her inimitable soul!

How We Foresaw It All -- EIGHT Years Ago!

CBS News has announced that Jeff Glor will become the new anchorperson of the CBS Evening News.
Here's how it was announced:
But, if you had been paying attention to the Dan Cirucci Blog eight long years ago, you would have known that we determined that Jeff Glor was a rising star at CBS even then. Of course, we were tipped off by our ever-perceptive friend and TV expert Joanne Calabria who is Vice President for Public Affairs for the CBS Stations Group. Thanks to Joanne, we got to watch Jeff live and in person at the CBS studios in New York and we could see that he would be an anchorperson some day. In fact, he was already prepping for the role.
Here's what we wrote on June 18, 2009 under the headline 'Emerging Star, Jeff Glor':
Ever hear of Jeff Glor?
If you haven't you soon will.
More on Jeff in a moment.
But let me begin by telling you about our amazing day in Manhattan with PR colleagues earlier this week.
We began in Philly at The Bellevue on Broad Street where a bunch of us boarded a mini bus for NYC.
Once in the Big Apple we lunched at Artisanal Restaurant on Park Avenue with Linda Ayares, Senior Vice President of M. Silver Associates specializing in tourism and travel PR and marketing. Linda regaled us with wonderful PR crisis stories and gave us incredible insight into building relationships with clients and helping clients navigate their way through some of the most harrowing public relations dilemmas imaginable.
Then, we were off to Peppercom Strategic Communications where we heard from Ted Birkhahn, Chief Operating Officer and Head of Client Services. Ted spoke about digital marketing and the emerging importance of social media in monitoring the media and customer landscape and spotting trends and developments for clients.
"It's all about customer insights," Ted said. Ted was joined by Sam Ford, Peppercom's Director of Consumer Insights who also gave us his own insights into how, when and why to use digital media (Twitter, blogs, Facebook, etc.) to gain information that is often better (and cheaper to acquire) than a focus group.
Ted and Sam know a thing or two about marketing and communications. Ted worked for Rudy Giuliani's media team when Rudy was Mayor of New York and Sam project manager for the MIT's Convergence Culture Consortium
After Peppercom we were whisked uptown to the CBS Broadcast Center where we met our friend Joanne Calabria for a private look inside the CBS Evening News.
And that's where Jeff Glor comes in.
Katie Couric wasn't anchoring the News on Tuesday evening. She was off and was replaced by Saturday News anchor Jeff Glor.
Jeff is sort of CBS-TV's answer to Anderson Cooper.
At 33, Jeff is one of the rising stars in the TV news business. He's a CBS national affairs reporter and is also seen on the CBS Early Show.
Remarkably telegenic and calm with a friendly, dispassionate manner he is a trained journalist and experienced reporter and acnhorperson who delivers the news with an enviable sense of professionalism.
We know this because we watched the Evening News being prepared and we saw Jeff and his colleagues in action. We were in the editing rooms as the broadcast was constructed and in the control room once the program began to air. We saw CBS and the Evening News in a way that very few people see it: from the inside, out.
After the program aired we heard from CBS Evening News Executive Producer Rick Kaplan who told us that "these are serious times and people expect a serious, reliable news broadcast." Kaplan added: "They don't want fluff. People are worried about their livelihood, their world, their families and their future. They expect us to deliver the news seriously, fairly, honestly."
Following the CBS session we all relaxed at Brasserie 8½ on 57th St. where many CBS staffers chill after a long day at the Broadcast Center.
Then, it was goodbye to Manhattan and back to Philly.
What a wonderful day!
BTW: The entire day was coordinated by the incredible Lisa Simon, President of Simon Public Relations Group in Philadelphia. Thanks, Lisa!

Let's Send Him To The Trash Heap NOW!

On the Late Show Stephen Colbert attacked the President of the United States by telling him "The only thing your mouth is good for is being Vladimir Putin's cock holster."
And then Colbert called the President a "prick-tator."
This is a new low, even for this smug, effete, pitiful excuse for a comedian. If you're watching Colbert, you're participating in the final, below-the-belt stages of what's left of liberalism -- a slim, withering, smutty shadow of its former self. You're also hastening the coarsening of what passes for "culture" in the world of the loony left.
Truly disgusting!
Don't delay. Tell CBS to Fire Colbert Now! Click here!

We're All In The Pink - With Special Offers, Too!

Lights, camera, go pink!  For the 15th year, LIGHTS FOR THE CURE, a joint effort by CBS 3 and Susan G. Komen® Philadelphia, is turning the area skyline pink -- from the Avenue of the Arts in Philadelphia to the Battleship New Jersey docked in Camden toLincoln Financial Field in South Philadelphia to the Bethlehem Steel Blast Furnaces in the Lehigh Valley and to the Dow Chemical Company in Newark, Delaware. The campaign recognizes National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which runs October 1st through October 31st.  Atlantic City’s lighting of landmarks takes place on Friday, October 7th in partnership with Susan G. Komen® Central and South Jersey.

Launched in 2002, LIGHTS FOR THE CURE  was the area’s first public service campaign to use the lighting of buildings and landmarks to promote a cause.

Beyond the message broadcast by the lights, the campaign has utilized the airwaves of both CBS-owned stations in Philadelphia, CBS 3 and The CW Philly to generate awareness of breast health, airing more than 2,000 reminders to schedule a mammogram since it started, one every time a building or landmark was showcased in Eyewitness News.

“CBS 3 and The CW Philly are honored to leverage the considerable voice of our two television stations in support of such an important cause,” says Brien Kennedy, President and General Manager of the stations. “In the 15 years since we turned the first building pink, the survivor community has grown significantly, no doubt due to increased awareness and the fine work of organizations like Susan G. Komen.”

“This October, Komen launches our new bold goal to reduce the number of U.S. breast cancer deaths by 50 percent within 10 years,” said Elaine I. Grobman, CEO, Komen Philadelphia. “We couldn’t pursue such an aggressive goal, nor could we have accomplished all we have in the past 30 years, without all-out supporters like CBS 3 by our side. Campaigns like Lights for the Cure, as well as all CBS 3 and CBS Radio invest in our local mission year-round, give us the awareness, resources and confidence to aim high and continue to save more lives every day.”

This year, CBS 3 and your Local Toyota Dealers will once again team up to help raise funds for the cause.   The campaign’s pink Toyota Camry will be on site at numerous events throughout October inviting participants to take a selfie. Toyota will donate $1 for each person who shares the photo with the hashtag #pinktoyota to Susan G. Komen Philadelphia.  Here are just a few locations where the pink Toyota can be found:

  • October 5th: Liberty Place Rotunda in Philadelphia, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • October 14: Starting line of the Susan G. Komen 3 Day® at Willow Grove Mall, 6 to 8 a.m. and at the finish line October 18th at the Philadelphia Navy Yard
  • October 20th: Cruise Night in Collingswood, New Jersey, 6-9 p.m.
  • October 23rd: the SportsRadio 94WIP Tailgate Zone at the South East corner of the Wells Fargo Center parking lot, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

For a complete list of events, go to www.CBSPhilly.com/pinktoyota. Look for a complete list of buildings and landmarks going pink at www.CBSPhilly.com/cure .

CBS 3, The CW Philly and Komen Philadelphia acknowledge the support of The Cancer Center at Kennedy Health and your Toyota Dealers, sponsors of this campaign.  We also thank our community partners in this campaign – One Liberty Observation Deck, Cescaphé Event Group and Philadelphia Parks and Recreation.

In honor of Lights for the Cure’s 15th anniversary, One Liberty Observation Deck, the place where you can see Philly From The Top and the pink lights up close, is offering a special $15 admission throughout October when you reserve tickets online in advance using code PINK at www.PhillyFromTheTop.com.

CBS 3 (KYW-TV) and The CW Philly (WPSG-TV) are part of CBS Television Stations, a division of CBS Corporation.

Remembering A Great Reporter's Shining Moments

We will miss Morley Safer.
He had something you don't hear much of anymore -- something called panache.
He was also cultured, civilized, erudite. He never insulted the viewer's intelligence. He was a worldly man with an insatiable curiosity and a gracious, human touch. He proved you could possess those admirable qualities and still be a damned good reporter -- shrewd, knowing, tough, fair.
Morley Safer was unique. There won't be another like him, not now, not ever.

Mom-To-Be Strikes Back For All Pregnant Women

Fed up with viewer complaints about her growing belly, Philadelphia's CBS 3 TV Meteorologist Katie Fehlinger, who is expecting twin girls next month, fought back in a Facebook post yesterday that has struck a nerve.

Here it is in its entirety:

Hey guys! Once more, I have to get something off my chest. So, the nature of my job makes me an easy target for criticism. I will always understand that, and I will most typically just ignore it. However, after someone blatantly called me a "sausage in casing" and another declared that "sticking your pregnant abdomen out like that is disgusting", I felt a need to draw a line and speak up.

Everyone's right to their opinion is important, but so are manners. And while rude comments like these will never make me feel the need to change anything about myself, I find a bigger underlying issue here. These particular nasty-grams were directed at a pregnant woman.

So this little manifesto of sorts is dedicated to every mother out there - other pregnant moms-to-be, moms reading this while their toddlers play on the swing set, moms whose kids have long since gone off to college...

You are beautiful.

Even during the most uncomfortable - and let's face it, less than glamorous - symptoms of pregnancy, what women go through to bring their precious children into the world is, simply put, AMAZING and you should be lauded.

Frankly, I don't care how "terrible" or "inappropriate" anyone thinks I look. I will gladly gain 50 pounds & suffer sleepless, uncomfortable nights if it means upping my chances to deliver 2 healthy baby girls. Now it's about more than aesthetics. I want these babies to have the best start possible. And that hopefully means my belly that "looks like it's about to explode!" will continue to grow the next few weeks.

I say let's raise a Shirley Temple to swollen feet, stretch marks, nausea, all the extra pounds and the dark circles! They're badges of motherhood. And for those of you who think that's "disgusting", remember a woman went through the very same thing to bring YOU into the world.

In the meantime, let's all remember the lesson Mom taught us - if you have nothing nice to say, say nothing at all.

Happy 30th Anniversary To TV Anchor Pat Ciarrocchi!

It's hard to believe its been 30 years since Pat Ciarrocchi first showed up on our TV screens on CBS3, KYW-TV in Philadelphia.
And we're proud to say we've known Pat all those years and have treasured her as one of the area's most trusted broadcast personalities. Pat is irrepressibly upbeat, always warm, generous, caring, smart and vivacious. In a tough business where few people remain at any one station for an extended period of time, Pat has won the hearts of Philadelphians and viewers throughout the region simply by being herself. Viewers never tire of Pat because they know she's the real deal -- a total professional and a genuine human being.
In addition to anchoring and reporting news for CBS 3, Pat Ciarrocchi is co-host with Ukee Washington of Talk Philly, CBS 3′s Emmy Award-winning news and lifestyle program, airing weekdays at noon.
Pat joined Channel 3 in 1982. Prior to her current assignment, she set the pace for morning news in Philadelphia as the station’s early morning news anchor, growing that program from a half-hour newscast to a two-hour staple in the market. Pat has excelled in a variety of assignments at Channel 3 from Evening Magazine, which she co-hosted from 1991 to 1992, traveling to Great Britain and Israel for special reports. She also served as the station’s medical reporter for five years, and has done some of her most memorable work at the Vatican where she reported live at the canonization of St. Katherine Drexel in 2000 and at the funeral of Pope John Paul II in 2005.
Pat Ciarrocchi’s work has earned her multiple Philadelphia Emmy Awards, including recognition for individual achievement in News Writing. She has won the nationally prestigious Gabriel Award from Catholic Academy of Communications Arts, a CEBA Award recognizing communications excellence to Black audiences and a Sarah Award from Women in Communications locally. In 2000, she was inducted into the Philadelphia Broadcast Pioneers Hall of Fame in recognition of her accomplishments in the television industry.
Before returning home to Philadelphia, Pat was anchor/reporter/producer for WHAG-TV in Hagerstown, Maryland for three years. She began her career in broadcasting in 1974 at WAMS Radio in Wilmington, but became captivated by reporting the news while on staff at WDEL Radio, Delaware’s top-rated radio station.
Pat Ciarrocchi has used the celebrity of her broadcasting career to better the lives of others, committing her personal time to community activism and fundraising on issues affecting women and children.
Since 1991, she has reported on and covered live the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, telling the stories of women and their families coping with breast cancer.
Pat has served on the boards of the Easter Seal Society of Southeastern Pennsylvania and Susan G. Komen for the Cure. She has also personally raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for local charities through The Pat Ciarrocchi Golf Classic and Pat’s Passion for Fashion Show and Auction, two local events she founded.
She's  has been awarded honorary doctorate degrees for her professional and community accomplishments from La Salle University in Philadelphia, Neumann University in Aston, Cabrini College in Radnor and her alma mater, Rosemont College. Ciarrocchi earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in American Studies from Rosemont in 1974. In 2006, she was presented with the college’s highest honor, the Cresset Award.
Happy anniversary Pat on 30 wonderful years at KYW-TV -- and many, many more.
You are a Philadelphia treasure!

Remembering Andy Rooney: Why He Mattered

Andy Rooney has passed away at 92 after complications from minor surgery.
Andy would be the first to tell you that he had a wonderful life. And in fact, he did tell you exactly that in his final commentary on 60 Minutes which was aired barely a month ago. (See the video above if you missed it.)
Rooney was an old-school wordsmith. He was a loyal company man and a hard worker.
But here's why he mattered: Andy didn't seek to become a television personality. He was, through and through, a writer -- and a damned good one.
Andy wrote good crisp, clear, concise copy. He wrote short, succinct sentences. He avoided fancy writing and unnecessary adornment.
He followed all the rules of good writing but he knew that a really fine writer has to break a few rules, too. And he wasn't afraid to break rules when he had to.
Andy Rooney spoke his mind. But in an age of crassness and vulgarity, he said what he had to say in a clean, spare, smart style. He never insulted his audience's intelligence. He was never condescending. He came across as an everyman but an everyman who could put what you were thinking into just the right words. He had an ear for everyday language of real people -- real Americans.
Yes, he seemed cranky at times, but who isn't? And the crankiness was part of Andy Rooney's schtick -- it became a vital element of his persona.
Above all, Andy Rooney was pretty much just as you saw him. He went on the air as he was. The office he sat in was his actual office. The books behind him were his books. The junk on his often cluttered desk was his junk. The bushy eyebrows were all his, and so were the ruddy cheeks. That's just the way he was. And that's how you saw him.
Andy Rooney didn't want to be a celebrity.
He simply wanted to be Andy Rooney. That was his actual name and that's who he really was, always. That's all he aspired to be.
He was a thoroughly American member of the Greatest Generation who never sought to be a well-known person or a TV personality and never sought undue attention.
He was authentic.
And he will be greatly missed.
