Men experiencing homelessness in Philadelphia who are in need of a nourishing meal are receiving ongoing critical assistance in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic thanks to a partnership between Saint John’s Hospice (SJH), a ministry of Catholic Social Services of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia (CSS), and Wawa, Inc.
From April 13th - May 29th, SJH will receive nearly 700 pre-packaged meals each week donated from Wawa via the Step Up to the Plate Initiative. The meals will be distributed during SJH’s daily lunch service.

SJH, part of the Housing and Homeless Services Division of CSS, provides crucial, life-sustaining services with dignity, respect and compassion to homeless men in Philadelphia. Recently, SJH’s daily lunch service has increased from serving nearly 220 individuals per day to approximately 320 as the number of individuals turning to SJH for assistance rises.
Note: For over 55 years, Saint John’s Hospice (SJH) has provided provide crucial, life-sustaining services with dignity, respect and compassion to men experiencing homelessness in Philadelphia. Each weekday, SJH provides more than 300 hot meals to its residential and day services guests, as well as case management, on-site nursing, daily showers, and a mailroom for over 900 men. Each year, it provides residential services for over 250 men transitioning from homelessness to independent living in the community.
