Villanova University President the Rev. Peter M. Donohue, OSA, PhD, has been appointed to the board of directors of the American Council on Education (ACE), the major coordinating body for the nation’s college and universities. Father Donohue will represent the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities (ACCU) for a three-year term on the ACE board. The appointment was announced in conjunction with ACE’s annual meeting June 26-27 in Washington, D.C.
“It’s an honor to be appointed as a member of the ACE board of directors,” said Father Donohue. “Villanova has been a member of ACE for many years now, and I have witnessed first-hand their impressive ability to address the needs of the ever-evolving higher education landscape and their commitment to improving access and outcomes for future generations of students.”
Representing nearly 1,800 college and university presidents and related associations, ACE brings the higher education community together on vital issues affecting institutions and students, and is at the center of federal policy debates in areas critical to higher education.
“The ACE Board of Directors oversees the Council’s efforts to advocate on behalf of all the nation’s colleges and universities, help ensure a strong pipeline of future campus leaders and provide our member institutions with the information they need to see around the corner in these challenging times for higher education,” said ACE President Molly Corbett Broad. “We appreciate Father Donohue’s willingness to help guide this important work and are pleased he is joining the Board as the representative of the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities.”
As the ACCU representative on the ACE Board of Directors, Father Donohue will be a voice for Catholic higher education and the more than 250 Catholic colleges and universities in the U.S.
“As a private, Catholic institution, Villanova brings its own distinctive perspective to the Council,” added Father Donohue. “I look forward to working with ACE’s fellow members—each with their own unique goals and missions—to find solutions to critical issues affecting colleges and universities and our students.”
Father Donohue is a leader in higher education who has been at the forefront of change, propelling Villanova to a period of significant transformation during his 11 years as president. Throughout this period in Villanova’s history, the University has introduced countless initiatives and become more nationally recognized for its academic prowess.
Father Donohue has also been an influential leader on issues relating to intercollegiate athletics as he helped chart the course for the new Big East Conference established in 2013. In addition to his service on the ACE board of directors, he has also sat on the board of numerous organizations at the regional, state and national levels. Father Donohue served as chair of the regional colleges and universities presidents’ council for the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce, as well as a board member for the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Pennsylvania and the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities.
Father Donohue has served as Villanova’s 32nd president since June 1, 2006. Under his leadership, the University has embarked on an ambitious ten-year strategic plan, launched Villanova’s largest comprehensive fundraising campaign, initiated a vibrant physical campus renovation and dramatically expanded student opportunities.
