Boehner: Debt Smothers Economy; We Must Act!

A special message from Speaker of the House John Boehner:

Spending-driven deficits, record debt, and the threat of tax hikes are smothering our economy with uncertainty and making it harder for small businesses to hire new workers.  This week, as the United States reached the legal debt limit and our federal government came one step closer to not being able to pay its bills, that uncertainty reached a new high.

It is time for the Democrats who run Washington to present a responsible plan to tackle out of control government spending and address our job-crushing debt.  We simply cannot continue to spend money we don’t have, and kicking the can down the road is not an option.

House Republicans have passed a serious plan by Chairman Paul Ryan to put us on a path to balance the budget and pay down our debt, spur job growth, and save programs like Medicare for current retirees and future generations.  And make no mistake, without serious budget reforms and significant spending cuts there will be no debt limit increase.

We’ve taken action; now it’s time for Senate Democrats and President Obama to do the same.

Sincerely,
