On the hit 1950s TV series Leave It To Beaver, June Cleaver was played by actress Barbara Billingsly. Billingsly died yesterday at her California home. She suffered from a rheumatoid disorder.
Barbara Billingsly never regretted playing June Cleaver. She actually liked the character. "She was the ideal mom," she said.
In fact, Billingsly said it was sometimes hard for her to figure out where she ended and June Cleaver began. She said she never felt that Mrs. Cleaver was weak. But as the typical 1950s stay-at-home mom, Billingsly said June Cleaver was the tenderness and love of the family. Billingsly felt the character did what mom's are supposed to do: offer concern, encouragement and understanding.
Leave It To Beaver ran from 1957 to 1963.
