Jeffrey Corzine, son of former New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine, took his own life at the age of 31.
The youngest of the former governor's three children with ex-wife Joanne, Jeffrey suffered from severe depression for years and been receiving treatment for a painful physical and mental ailment.
According to the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services' Center for Health Statistics, depressive disorders affect an estimated 9.5 percent of adult Americans in a given year, or about 20.9 million people. It's a nasty, silent disease that can devastate families.
Governor Christie has sent condolences to the Corzine family on behalf of “all the people of New Jersey.” We share in that sentiment. Regardless of political stances and allegiances, no one should have to bury a child.
We also know people who have lost loved ones to this disease and are friends with people currently battling depression. Our thoughts and prayers are with all families who are fighting this disease and trying to cope with it affects on those they care about.
