The New Jersey Senate has approved legislation sponsored by Senator Dawn Marie Addiego (R-8) that would create an email notification system to let people know when the Governor orders flags to be flown at half-staff.
“We fly the flags of the United States of America and the State of New Jersey at half-staff at times to honor, mourn and remember,” said Senator Addiego. “It’s important that we have the means to notify people when to lower their flags and explain why we’re doing it.”
The legislation, S-325, requires the Secretary of State to create and maintain an email notification system for persons who sign-up to be notified when the Governor orders flags to be flown at half-staff.
The email notification would include the date and purpose for the flags to be flown at half-staff.
“Many people who fly flags at home or work don’t know when flags should be lowered and they often see flags lowered without knowing why,” added Addiego. “The new notification system will help us draw attention to the people and events that we as a state honor.”
The Senate approved the measure in a 33-0 vote.
